@joachim@boitam.eu now a serious answer to a less than serious take. "AI" is a bunch of matrix multiplications, it can't "be over". The idea of LLMs specifically fits into one rather short paper. OpenAI may be making its last breaths now, but Gemini and Copilot belong to companies that are too large to fail. Anthropic will be saved by acquisition, most likely. Open weight models are just files and won't disappear, and that's a good thing. We could use them to take power from the big tech. If we cared.

FFS I'm tired from reading takes like this (#gitlab). "Human in control" only works if you use AI as a fine tool: carefully and only when benefits are clear. For agentic development, it's bullshit company leaders tell each other to make their strategy seem plausible.

The key problem is that in the agentic development world humans will quickly unlearn to understand first the code, then the architecture. You cannot be an architect without hands-on experience. Best case, you'll be a mediocre PM.

An example. There was a recent article proving that AI, if let to process its own outputs, cannot reach superintelligence. Quite the opposite. And that was proven mathematically (or so I understood, I'm not an actual smart person). Has anyone put thoughts into how it applies on smaller scale, i.e. on agents being left more or less alone on software, with only design guidance from humans? Can it be seen as a proven fact that the code will turn into chaos? Or is it likely but who knows?

#AI haters, your time to shine!

In a few weeks I'll probably have to make a presentation on full-cycle agentic development, and it's going to be a tough one. I'd appreciate links to any high-quality analysis of this topic specifically. Downsides, gotchas, misconceptions, you know. The more thoughtful and nuanced the better.

Note that I'm not looking for general AI criticism - I can produce enough of it myself. And no, the target audience is not much interested in purely ethical aspects, alas.

We were proud but lonely in our isolated corners of the world. And then we realized, to the greatest dismay, that the world had moved on from us. That nearly everyone was still using the horrifying social networks we left, for their desire for communication and entertainment was stronger. And we kept asking ourselves if that crazy suggestion to take control of the problem instead of running from it would have resulted in a better world. Nobody knew. The tale is about AI. 2/2

I'll tell you a tale.

Once, we looked at social networks we used and realized that their algorithms were hostile, their environment footprint untenable, and their fascistic owners had terrible motives. So we rejected the very idea of social networks and shamed anyone who tried to use them. And when someone suggested a network that is controlled by community members and consists of federated servers, we rejected them in disgust for any social network is immoral by design.

@jwcph @Ponygirl just like nobody has proven that woodworking machines can be useful, right? 😉 (yes, you fell victim of your own analogy) It's not even remotely hard to prove that LLMs are useful (refactoring, difficult rebases, generating skeletons for projects, etc), anyone who honestly tried them knows that. Their problems are ethical, political, environmental and financial. LLMs (esp. frontier ones) are unsustainable, whether they work or not.

@dimllychlyngarw@troet.cafe @onekind@beige.party @zoy@merveilles.town this is just a dump of your favorite stereotypes about LLM. If you suddenly want your point to be understood by a varied audience, including people who may be prejudiced against you, you have no option than to polish it. If you cannot do it (e.g. because you're not a native speaker) and cannot afford paying for it, LLMs are your next best choice. "Let's accept imperfect texts" is a great idea but wishful thinking in reality. Try it with your big boss.
