@robinhood@yiff.life lol yeah most of my computer knowledge just comes from clicking on shit as a kid and going "oh ok so this is the kind of thing the View menu has" Oh it's not in View? Well let's check the other menus around it then, it's bound to be somewhere 🤷♀️

@ainiriand@mastodon.social @robinhood@yiff.life I was when I was really little but for some reason stopped at one point :( Like, too young to remember, I had to be told that I used to take floppy disks apart By the time I was older I wasn't even allowed to build my own PC cause "you'll break the expensive parts we bought for you" 💀

@robinhood@yiff.life It's a source of constant frustration for my wife that I don't know how to solve *any computer problems at all* based on how she describes them, but can generally do it by clicking around randomly until I find the option that might fix it, which I have no idea what it might be called until I see it, and will *instantly* forget afterwards.

@robinhood@yiff.life This got my dad so, so far despite not being in a tech career and not stopping to learn or anything. He was miles ahead of most of his peers. There were some problems during the "a million fake download buttons in every page" era of the internet, but eventually I installed some good adblocker for him and it was fine. And then with the smartphones era there is no proper undo button and the options are now hidden instead of buttons on the screen, so he has much more trouble.

@robinhood@yiff.life yeah, I recall being in a computer class at my local college and I was one of three people in the class who tried things out and experimented. One of the others didn't last long - purloined the server key ( a physical key that went in the front of the machine to start it up, shut it down and engage administrator mode) and tried to get a copy cut at the local keycutters the next day, and got arrested and thrown off the course. I knew how to do certain things but never caused harm.

@robinhood@yiff.life Me at my first Desktop Support job. Made it three years on just clicking everything. Only left to go to University. Probably coulda made it to retirement on just clicking everything, in retrospect, but the BA was worth it.

@robinhood@yiff.life A surprisingly large number of people just don't seem to have the spark of curiousity that would lead to 90% of problems being solved.

@robinhood@yiff.life I am this person for my coworkers, and what I've learned is that it's largely fear preventing people from doing this. So when I deliver training, I usually go out of my way to stress that it's okay to try stuff out.
-
@benfulton@fosstodon.org 2024-12-05 01:16
@robinhood@yiff.life I suppose the fear of clicking is due to being worried that you'll do something irreversible, which, if you are a clicker, seems silly. But especially in super complex applications like Word, that fear is not entirely unjustified.

@robinhood@yiff.life I have been yelling this at people for over 30 years. I was a kid and "good at computers" and people kept asking me to do stuff and I was just like YOU JUST NEED TO CLICK ON THINGS. IF IT'S BROKEN, CLICK ON THINGS UNTIL IT ISN'T. IF IT DOESN'T DO THE THING YOU WANT, CLICK UNTIL IT DOES
