TIL that the Malagasy legislature passed a law last month that any land plot acquired by a non-Malagasy citizen during the colonial era will have its ownership reverted to the Malagasy state, unless the previous owner can prove that the land has since passed into private Malagasy ownership.

Today’s take is that people who see LLMs and gen AI as a tool against the copyright system are missing the issue that LLMs and gen AI have the same exact flaw as the copyright system: Megacorps laying claim to all of human creativity and aiming to be the only ones allowed to sell it back to you. Like… baby, the hundred-million-dollar companies transparently running a “first hit is free” scam on you are absolutely NOT about “democratizing” shit.

In the last few years, I’ve seen far many more people criticizing progressives for having a cult-like devotion to Bernie Sanders, than I’ve seen actual progressives displaying a cult-like devotion to Bernie Sanders. In fact, I’ve run into a good dozen of the former in the last week alone, but can’t remember when I last interacted with the latter.

Sorry, my brain last night decided to remember that time a former mutual announced in public that they unsubscribed from several Patreons because, paraphrased, “$5 for full-res illustrations is a rip-off, give me MORE if I’m paying that much”. Aside from the fact that they described the exact way I’m running my Patreon as a “rip-off”, consider the optics of complaining in public that you’re “only” getting several full-res illustrations for FIVE (5) dollars.

From Tumblr user AtomicWrongs: I also think it’s important to tell the difference between “the author’s barely-disguised fetish” and “the audience member’s unrealised kink that they’re projecting onto the author because seeing a character tied up is making them feel funny in their Audience Member Parts”

Do I want to watch a YouTuber do a blind reaction to a Malagasy song? (Blind reaction as in “has zero prior knowledge about Malagasy culture or language”) Do I want to risk it?

The four-hectare (ten-acre) Sabotsy market in Antsirabe (Madagascar’s third largest city) burned down last night, reportedly being at least 90% destroyed. No injuries have been reported, but the near-total destruction of the city’s largest market has left the population traumatized.

Most vampires don’t live in castles. Dracula lives in a castle because he’s a count, not because he’s a vampire. Most vampires don’t have That Accent. Dracula has that accent because he’s from Romania, not because he’s a vampire. Hashtag Stop Stereotyping Vampires.

RE: https://yiff.life/@erkhyan/116966419438971263 I commented on BlueSky about how some of the responses to this post here on the Fediverse were needlessly hostile, argumentative, and/or pedantic, especially coming from users with “FOSS” and “tech” in their profile texts… … and I just discovered right now that my account almost immediately got added to two blocklists titled “Anti-FOSS” and “Anti-Fediverse”. Heh.

I don’t remember, does Mastodon (or GlitchSoc) have an option to search specifically for a reply to me or a mention of me? I just realized now that there’s a post I intended to reply to, but forgot about for a few days, and now it’s hopelessly lost in the absolute flood of replies I’ve been getting in the last couple of days.

Your irregular reminder that “Immaculate Conception” does not refer to Jesus being born without a biological father, but to Mary being conceived and born without sin because Embryo Jesus needed to be implanted into a completely sinless womb.

Every time I see people clamoring for the internet to be like it used to be before, I cannot help but wonder if they’re also thinking of fixing an issue from the old internet, which is that the world in “world wide web” often looked like this.

To this day, I still don’t understand why people were so goddamn ANGRY that the Imperial protagonists in Star Wars: Battlefront II defected to the Rebellion mid-story. Were people really THAT eager to play unrepentant fascist death squads? I mean, if that’s what you’re into, then Star Wars: Squadrons lets you play an Imperial squadron that never defects and even gets to blow up several civilian hospital ships for bonus points at one point.

Me: “I wish it was as safe to go out at night in Antananarivo as it is during the day.” Monkey’s paw: *one finger curls up* Antananarivo: *becomes unsafe to go out during the day too, due to a wave of mass hysteria* (I would elaborate, but this is all so stupid, I don’t know if I could stand to. Maybe later.)

The shortest possible day (sunrise to sunset) in Antananarivo is 10 hours and 59 minutes, and the longest possible day is 13 hours and 16 minutes. As you can imagine, it was a bit of a shock when I moved to Paris (shortest day 8 hours and 15 minutes, longest day 16 hours and 11 minutes) for a little while.

Today in “sounds obvious but I didn’t think of it”: Every photo of the moon seen through a rainbow has the moon roughly three quarters full, because of the physics of rainbows. (i.e. a rainbow is a circle that’s 42 degrees wide around the opposite of the sun’s direction, meaning that in order to be seen through a rainbow, the moon has to be 42 degrees away from/to being full.)

Today in Madagascar news, people in the neighborhood of Ivandry in Antananarivo were surprised to hear gunfire. The official explanation? The presidential guard says they noticed a couple of drones following the presidential motorcade, so they… uh… attempted to shoot them down.
