@ElenLeFoll reminded of the time in the 90s when I was catching the tube home and the ticket office was closed. I couldn't buy a ticket from the machine as I only had Scottish notes on me and presented myself at the barrier at the other end to pay my fare. They called through to station I said I'd travelled from to confirm my story before they would issue my ticket rather than a penalty fare. Happy days!

@ElenLeFoll So many problems to overcome, only because guillotines were not imported to Britain when they were fashionable in the mainland ๐ฅฒ

@ElenLeFoll The US has had this as an unforced error with most bills for a while now because apparently we forgot how to standardize designs

@ElenLeFoll Why is that note about "notes" (paper money) next to the coin slot?
-
@Szescstopni@circumstances.run 2025-12-30 15:31
@ElenLeFoll Perhaps it wouldn't pay to upgrade the software considering the king's age and health.

@ElenLeFoll This never would have happened if they'd adopted the Euro. Neither would Brexit, I'd say.

@ElenLeFoll It's what you get when you starve govt and make one part unable to work with another. It's also what you get when businesses refuse to update their models to save money. Poor or no service is often the outcome. A machine would accept one class of banknote and not another, for example, because it hasn't been reprogrammed to accept the different appearance of the new banknote. It's not because there's a fundamental problem with the note.

@ElenLeFoll What I find most odd is the specificity of the notice. I mean, if they didn't put King Charles III, I would never have tried my King Charles II note...

@ElenLeFoll why would it not work? other countries change the people on the bills all the time and atms still work. euro coins have different designs for each country.

@ElenLeFoll It's only a matter of time until our machines won't accept bills with Trump on them.
-
@dartigen@aus.social 2025-12-30 22:34
@ElenLeFoll And here I thought the machines were like, scanning some kind of embedded something in the note to find out the denomination, not scanning the look of the note or something. (I know the notes in some countries are also slightly different sizes but I thought that was purely an accessibility feature.)

@ElenLeFoll Not really uniquely British: none of the ticket machines around here accept bank notes showing king Charles either, and I'm in California, 9 time zones from Britain...

@ElenLeFoll Canadian coin machines have no troubles with Elizabeth II or Charles III coins (although I once saw a roll of loonies with a Chuck-e-Cheezes token inside)

@ElenLeFoll There are a lot of countries that could in theory have the same issue.
