@quinn@social.circl.lu HOA's, credit ratings, lack of healthcare, gun culture, all the horrible things here that make you go "WTF were they thinking" can all be traced back to racism. Including, of course, our current Civil War 2.0. At least we now have an opportunity to confront all the shit we failed to confront after the first Civil War.

@quinn@social.circl.lu I recall an observation about the US, having no official state religion, became a competitive marketplace for churches and cults that had the most compelling and sticky offerings for participants to foster growth and engagement. I also see pride in positional, institutional competition, like "where are the Wiccan sponsored hospitals?" Which is a terrible way to locate caring for each other.

@quinn@social.circl.lu I think a big part of it is Sportsball allegiences as well. Its like the focus of the extreme individuality cerates a vacuum of social belonging that instead gets filled by corporate/ religious cults instead. Automotive brands - especially among truck owners - is a particularly toxic cult, in addition to the sportsball one mentioned above, and of course religious ones - not to mention the political ones. Being A-cultish is offensive to some for some reason...

@quinn@social.circl.lu I rented a house in an HOA once, and they literally required all mailboxes to be black. And not be just any black. It was literally specified by a Pantone color and must have a flat finish. Never again, ESPECIALLY if I own it.

@quinn@social.circl.lu HOA’s seem strange to me as a Canadian. Like shouldn’t exist strange.

@quinn@social.circl.lu There's a Youtuber in my shorts who keeps showing up. He is a landscaper and does paid and free clearing of gardens. His videos seem to be all HOA weirdos showing up to harass him or his client for him doing their lawn. I'm British and the idea of your neighbours being able to fine you or put a lien on your house for garden state is bizarre. As is the idea your neighbours could harass tradespeople working for you (paid or free). I learned about HOAs from this guy...

@quinn@social.circl.lu Goota love the HOA thst says they went way over budget last year. But, they fail to mention that many are barely making ends meet this days due to the Trump Economy. Many don't have the cashflow to pay the yearly fee. Cultists think everyone has money, and they want it.

@quinn@social.circl.lu "...ecosystem of cults." I've seen these tendencies in cultures completely different than the US.

@quinn@social.circl.lu calling america the land of the free is increasingly like calling north korea the democratic people's republic of korea.

@quinn@social.circl.lu When I moved to America at the end of the 90s, as an European that had been indoctrinated with American "Land of the Free" culture, I was rather shocked to realize I was coming from a much more free continent.

@paco@infosec.exchange 2026-06-10 20:49
@quinn@social.circl.lu Yes. I spent 10 years living outside the US and it radically changes how it looks living inside the US. In theory, proponents of "freedom" ought to be the most tolerant of all. I not only want to do whatever I want (that doesn't hurt others) but I should be really tolerant of others doing what they want (as long as it doesn't hurt others). That isn't how it plays out, though.

@quinn@social.circl.lu As someone raised Jehovahs Witness, (jury is apparently still out on whether they count as a cult) yup.

@arrrg@kolektiva.social 2026-06-12 01:33
@quinn@social.circl.lu It's all bullshit. The US is a slave nation built on stolen land. That's why they try to so hard to keep everyone in line ... this isn't real. It's not based on anything but enriching the few at the expense of the many. Having been born here, I feel like I'm a victim, trapped in a death cult that I can't escape.

@quinn@social.circl.lu It’s divisive, just like our current politics, where politicians provide lip service to each special interest topic but represent none.
