@quinn@social.circl.lu I think a big part of it is Sportsball allegiences as well.
Its like the focus of the extreme individuality cerates a vacuum of social belonging that instead gets filled by corporate/ religious cults instead.
Automotive brands - especially among truck owners - is a particularly toxic cult, in addition to the sportsball one mentioned above, and of course religious ones - not to mention the political ones.
Being A-cultish is offensive to some for some reason...

@ike@pkm.social @quinn@social.circl.lu Oh yeah, sports are, and cars can be, very cultish. If you don’t care for sports, that’s a big strike against you. At least the US sportsball fans don’t riot when their team loses. That’s reserved for when they win

@ike@pkm.social that's universal though, and in deep history. Think of the Blues and the Greens in Constantinople, up to FIFA soccer now. it doesn't always have the same broad divisions or in group vs out group dynamics.
