  • @HI_Greens@mastodon.scot to be fair the demands we make on the government for pensioner income (they aren't actually doing all that well, particularity the poorest) and for NHS care are increasing as the population ages and becomes increasing badly fed and unfit. However we can afford to fund this if we chose to. Strictly (according to MMT) we don't need to increases taxes but it would be perhaps it would be easier to justify if we were to tax those best able to afford it more (the rich, particularly the tax-avoiding ultra-rich and multinationals such as Amazon) and to remove the profiteering private sector out of our national services - NHS, Care, Water, Railways, Energy.

@HI_Greens@mastodon.scot These things are "sustainable" if society as a whole wants them to be sustained. Public services are NOT the same as profit-making businesses. The "profit" of a public service is the "service", not money.

@HI_Greens@mastodon.scot Hear hear! It's malign foreign influence and their agents trying to divide and conquer. How lucky are we to be Europeans! Look at all these so-called 'superpowers' that "can't afford" basic healthcare. Our very existence shames them. imho you may as well give up as a society if you cannot do the very minimum of housing, feeding, healing and educating your citizens. If there are people starving in your country by design you are in a failed state. We can obviously do better too. Still.

That's an over-simplification. Pensions were affordable when a large generation was paying for a small generation living for a short time. Now, a small generation is paying for a large generation (boomers) living forever. You do not save up for your own pension, you pay for that of your parents and grandparents. Boomers trying to get younger generations on-board with not cutting pensions is literal generation theft. Don't let them.

  • @HI_Greens@mastodon.scot The hat trick the private sector pulled off was to redirect government spending into their own bank accounts. fresh money spent directly into their net worth. This is why nobody else has any money, because the government doesn’t spend on them anymore. Government spending is for billionaires and taxes are what everyone else pays
