@soph@grrl.me Well, someone has to pay for all of the multibillion $ new datacenters to run this stuff… Guess what? That’s the consumer who was told that “inference is going to zero” and well, … it’s not. All those managers who thought this was a better bet than negotiating salaries for their developers are now confronted with price hikes where they have zero leverage or negotiation power

@soph@grrl.me Beside the issues, I'm slightly mad that I missed out on the cheap tokens. As in an ideal world I had the time and energy to learn to work with the tools while it was still cheap.

@soph@grrl.me I can't be the only one having done even the rough math about the current "dude, it's (almost) free and will be so in the future!" model of a lot of these services. The huge price hike basically just waiting for the moment when they've calculated that they have enough hopelessly dependent users that pay any price even when the great majority walk away after the pricing changes. Just like it seems to be the way with everything these days.

@soph@grrl.me My employers have started restricting cost on a monthly basis. One of my colleagues is having to relearn how to code. This is going to happen a lot more. The companies who are most into it will restrict use because of cost. And still expect the same performance improvements that they always did (and never got). Those who have become totally reliant on it will die. Good.

@soph@grrl.me The sad part of all this is that even this level of piratical greed won’t be enough to pay for the infrastructure the hyperscalers want to build for training new generations of models that won’t get them what they promised: AGI that might actually makes these gadgets useful (and even more dangerous than what they’re giving us now).

@soph@grrl.me I see a lot of talk about cloud services and data centre costs regarding the price uptick for "AI" usage, which strikes me as a bit odd given the decade and change of datacentres not related to ML processing scaling up and not a single soul afaict ever saying anything about costs being subsidised for the big names. Obviously, Google and Microsoft had to be making their money back elsewhere for literally free services and had already been on track to increase costs before ChatGPT existed. I'm also no stranger to the fact that smaller providers for non-AI services had to either weaken their free tier significantly or change you more for the same service. My confusion is what seems to be the claim this is *just* like generic enshitification and not something uniquely costly and resource intensive being sold at an even more aggressive loss than the average numbskull's Dropbox account in 2015. I might be interpreting your post incorrectly.
