@soph@grrl.me I see a lot of talk about cloud services and data centre costs regarding the price uptick for "AI" usage, which strikes me as a bit odd given the decade and change of datacentres not related to ML processing scaling up and not a single soul afaict ever saying anything about costs being subsidised for the big names. Obviously, Google and Microsoft had to be making their money back elsewhere for literally free services and had already been on track to increase costs before ChatGPT existed. I'm also no stranger to the fact that smaller providers for non-AI services had to either weaken their free tier significantly or change you more for the same service. My confusion is what seems to be the claim this is *just* like generic enshitification and not something uniquely costly and resource intensive being sold at an even more aggressive loss than the average numbskull's Dropbox account in 2015. I might be interpreting your post incorrectly.
