@Willow@chaosfem.tw I was not perimebopausal at that point, but I was older then a lot of things I've read (30) My biggest one I am confident in my voice. I am confident in how I sound when I speak. I had massive voice dysphoria with my speaking voice (I sang in a high soprano to give context) and that is gone (despite the fact that I've only dropped to low alto/high tenor)

@Willow@chaosfem.tw I was in my early 40s and my periods were still very regular so not sure perimenopausal. The most instant effects were no more periods and a raging sex drive. And I DO mean raging. Dealing with constant intrusive sexual thoughts was really the hardest part for me, like my brain was uncontrollable. It took more than a year to calm down. Aside from this minor temporary effect (a bit of acne too) it's just great, both physically and mentally.

@Willow@chaosfem.tw 3 years on T. tbhh. the Biggest thing for me is that i Love how my voice feels inside my throat/mouth now. it feels so nice to just, talk?? like everything else, also cool. i don't know that ive had very many psychological reactions.. it has made me a bit hornier and i like having facial hair and i like that strangers are more likely to gender me correctly (though it'll never be 100%). i feel much more attractive in general which is nice. im comfortable enough in my own body now that im making presentation decisions based on what I Want, rather than how i think others will see me. i have long pink hair now! i wear dresses again! and still feel comfortable in my gender (largely because. beard. lol) but my Favorite effect is how it changed my voice π

@Willow@chaosfem.tw I was in my 30s when I started and I have been on for nine years now. I started and continue to take a "typical" dose of injection T. I was warned that my periods might not stop right away but mine sure did. I felt pretty elated from the first day I started it but I think that was (mostly) psychological. My voice started dropping in a few months, mostly I started losing my upper range but I practised a lot of singing at the time in order to feel out my voice changes and I was able to start going fairly low from quite early, it just wasn't the most reliable to start. The hardest part was finding my "mixed voice" where you use head + chest, but learning to resonate in my chest was a lot of fun. My sex drive was pretty high to start with but having been depressed for a while it did noticeably go up. I didn't find that hard to deal with though. A little bit of acne, that went away after a few years. I just started feeling... better, mentally. That's continued.

@Willow@chaosfem.tw i started t at 37, i joke that i'm dealing with peri and second puberty at the same time. i'm nonbinary and started on very low dose gel and now am on a larger dose (but my body reacts strongly to hormones) the biggest and main effect, even on the lowest dose, has been a drastic improvement on my mental health. a lot of my social anxiety about "do i belong here" completely vanished. absolutely wild. pmdd type stuff is gone. i feel much calmer and i am not crying multiple times a week anymore. my periods were already erratic so i have no notes on that and now i've had a hysto. i kept my ovaries and get sporadic ovulation pain still. all other cramps and stuff are gone. i have had some acne, mostly on my body, and started needing to deal with hidrendiasis superativa which started before t but got pretty bad and needed clyndamicin for. i think this is a peri and t issue (have i spelled any of those three words right today? don't answer that) i also noticed vaginal dryness and loss of elasticity and now use e cream once or twice a week. very small amount. it has worked great. clitoral growth is happening and started early on i have had some body hair growth, a bit of facial hair growth, and only a small amount of voice changes. my body shape has changed and i'm more barrel than hourglass now which is very affirming to me. *i don't personally identify as masc but fit under the umbrella for the sake of this question

@Willow@chaosfem.tw I wasn't perimenopausal, but according to my surgeon the oldest trans person he had with 39 years. I started T when I was 36 which was 10 years ago and the utter euphoria when I realized my voice was changing cannot be described. My period stopped practically right away cos they kickstarted me on two extreme high doses in a span of four weeks (which seems unusual as far as others report?) So effects set in almost instantly after two or three weeks. My vocal cords actually ached kinda bad with how fast things were changing. I loved to witness how the fat distribution worked. Thighs and hips lost fat and trousers fit so much better. It was so weird to actually notice that even my cheeks and my throat lost fat π I did a lot of sports back then and my results soared high without more practice. The facial hair growth is amazing. I have more than most of the men around me π Negative parts exist as well of course. For me as an ace person the hightened libido is a real fucking annoying thing. Who the fuck has time for that π₯Ή the hair growth doesn't stop and by now I have more in common with a bear than a man π€£ unfortunately, the hair I grow on my body, I lose on my head. Which. Not cool tbqh. But oh well π¬ My period stopped immediately but the period cramps I've always had went into unbearable and I was non functional from pain for two days every couple of weeks. Only stopped after surgery. Maybe a thing that isn't so common knowledge - right after the shot and the day after I was extremely tired during the first two or three years. Hormones working in overdrive and body needed all the energy for it and I barely could concentrate on anything. But overall the effects were exactly what I needed to finally be comfortable with myself. My depression is gone. (Most of) My anxiety is gone. I am so much more self confident and situations I couldn't deal with before are now barely a blip on my radar. I walk into situations and handle them well that were cause for mental break downs before. I am so much more free in all aspects of my life.

@Willow@chaosfem.tw not perimenopausal, but i do have an experience to share for others who may be interested started in 2020 at 50mg/wk, and that was good for four years (both prescribed and DIY). took about two months for my menstrual cycle to stop, and i never had an issue with any random bleeding/spotting in that time (aside from missed doses) i went off for a year due to financial/personal issues, and when i went back on my previous dose, i found that my period was basically the same as before. stopped again for a while, because i got frustrated at that and kinda gave up. 2-3 months ago, i realized that the mental benefits were the most important to me (it helps stabilize/regulate my emotions, though it is not a silver bullet), so i increased the dosage to 75mg/wk and got serious with maintaining it. fingers crossed this does the trick with the menstrual issue π

@Willow@chaosfem.tw 2.5 years on T, started 6 years into perimenopause at 45. I take a lower dose than a trans man (60mg every nine-ish days) because I'm non-binary and didn't like how I felt at larger doses. biggest takeaway: I love T. I love how I look, how I feel. I love my new voice, and all the extra hair. I look in the mirror and just grin at myself. My periods stopped immediately (thank the gods) and the PMDD I suffered from most of my life is gone. After a month I ... (1/?)

@Willow@chaosfem.tw I started at 24 so not perimenopausal but I did get an increase in body hair (I already had some chin hairs from a natural hormonal imbalance, going on T turned it from a few hairs on one side of my chin to small patches on either side of my chin and small sparse patches close to my ears/cheeks). I am unsure if it affected my periods since I am also taking progestin to stop them, although I did run out of progestin for a few days and had a very heavy period for 5 days. If it matters I am on 2 pumps of gel and my levels are around 350 (I forget the unit of measurement but towards the low end for a cis male). It did also cause some vaginal atrophy; I used to be able to get a Pap smear relatively comfortably (the speculum didnβt hurt, the only part that hurt was actually collecting the cells from the cervix) and I recently went to get an IUD and the speculum hurt a lot, even the smallest size. So I would recommend paying attention to the pelvic floor flexibility changes because if it gets uncomfortable they can prescribe low dose vaginal estrogen to help stop the atrophy if needed. I love how my voice has dropped, itβs deeper but I definitely still sound like myself. Let me know if there are any more specific questions I can answer lol

@Willow@chaosfem.tw I started T while perimenopausal, I was 41 or 42, and I'm on a cis-normal dose. I went from always being cold to being pretty close to one of those guys who wears shorts all year round, I'm always too warm now. I sweat more (though the smell of the sweat seems actually less bad then it did pre-T!). I have more appetite now (as far as I can tell, other things complicate this). The fat redistribution was SUCH a relief for me. And it's easier to gain muscle, esp in my upper body.

@Willow@chaosfem.tw I was perimenopausal for 2 years prior to starting T. Not really sure what your friend is wanting to know, so I'm open to talking more about how it's been so far. I don't seem to have had the common experiences with hot flushes or sweating more, possibly because I had already adapted to that. Facial hair and body hair didn't take as long as I expected to start changing. Not really noticed a huge shift in appetite, but I was already constantly hungry. Changes in face and body shape have been quite slow.

@Willow@chaosfem.tw There's a lot of different ways! Would your friend want to know more about the physical changes, or the inner ones? I was 37 when I started, and according to my endo at the time I was perimenopausal. The most desired trait was the relatively fast cessation of periods -- after about a month and a half they were dramatically reduced, and three months had them gone. My voice dropped rather quickly, though I still had to do some practice before I was understood as male over the phone. I've heard that older trans men sometimes have their voice go deeper more quickly than younger trans guys. That was another welcome change. As an older trans guy I saw hair thinning starting at about the second year. Your body tends to try and catch up to where your age thinks a cis hairline would be, based on your family. Thus I transitioned into a 40-year-old hairline, rather than a young man's masc hairline. So after the first year or two, finasteride might be good to take to halt hair loss (not sooner, to prevent it interfering with bottom growth). For older trans guys, it's kind of a wild ride as you start with puberty just like every trans person who takes hormones...but then your body and mind spend the next five or so years fast-forwarding from 13 to your current biological age. It's a different ride from a younger trans guy. There can be a lot of grief and anger about missed time -- but also, the appreciation of having lived two full sets of gender experiences. I've been on testosterone for a little over 9 years now. I've loved every minute of it and cannot think of anything I regret. πβ

@Willow@chaosfem.tw perimenopausal enby on T here! I love it. Low dose (1.67% topical gel over my shoulder 2x/week) to start and it's been extremely helpful, along with a hormonal IUD so I haven't had a period in over 5 years. Nearly all my symptoms have gone away: hot flashes, night sweats, waking up 8 or more times to pee. In the US, so my nurse had to prescribe it for gender dysphoria because they wouldn't cover it for perimenopause.
