I love those videos where a guy cooks a big meal -- bread, steak, veggies, tea -- in the wilderness, with nothing but a knife, tea kettle, and a big flat rock. ... And the $50,000 vehicle that brought him to the wilderness, and ten grand of video editing equipment, and an entire global trade system that brought him his spices and oils and meats and veggies... People watching that thing thinking, I'll be ok when civilization fails, I know where there's a flat rock.

@fatsam@mstdn.social In Boy Scouts, our troop had a survival challenge at summer camp: 3 days in the woods with nothing but clothes and a pocket knife. Some kids came back really effing dirty, hungry, and dehydrated, while others came back looking pretty relaxed and happy. But they all came back. Short-term survival (e.g., a meal or a day) is almost always trivial. It's when you hit a few days in the wilderness that starts to separate those who know what they're doing from those who are gonna die.

  • @fatsam@mstdn.social yeah, if civilization collapses, the one thing that will most definitely not be viable is hunting for food. 8 billion people suddenly needing to 'live off the land' nets only mass die offs for the scarce prey and the wildly over numbered humans. The only survivors will be ppl who have years of food stored up, a defensive capacity that can repel military tanks, fresh water *production*, and dozens of other things/skills/abilities. In other words, nobody. Survivors will be random luck among ppl with a subset of above.

@fatsam@mstdn.social This is why I have the sidest of eyes for the suburban revolutionaries who want to tear down "the establishment" but have no real idea what to do to replace the civic infrastructure that would collapse during such an event.

  • @fatsam@mstdn.social [civilization collapses] Mob of people: “Hey, I know where we can a bunch of gear and food.” Prepper: “Yeah, I also have guns and lots of ammo.” Mob of people: “I know where we can get food *and* guns.” Prepper: “I have a hundred guns.” Mob: “There’s a hundred of us.” Prepper: “Yeah.” Mob: “You have two hands.” Prepper: “Yeah.” Mob: “Math. Plus we have guns too.” Prepper: “Oh.” Mob: “But thanks for the food and guns.”

@fatsam@mstdn.social LOL meanwhile, somebody's grandma cooks a village-sized feast while wearing a dress and barefoot, cutting all the vegetables into bite-sized pieces while squatting over a cleaver. I adore this woman. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hinixe8QehU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlUYRqwfeok

@fatsam@mstdn.social Also the other 10,000 people who know about that flat rock won't be making for it to cook the rapidly thawing meat from their freezer too. @jikodesu@mastodon.social

@fatsam@mstdn.social The challenge might then become getting the steak out of the boar. Last time I checked they don't hand that out willingly.... 🤣 Or grinding the wheat to be able to get a dough for that loaf of bread. But when you already have a flat rock I'm sure ther'll be another one to use as millstone...

@fatsam@mstdn.social Nuclear warfare is really the only disaster where fleeing cities for the wilderness would be better for survival than just sheltering in place.
