I've been experimenting with this little sunset boat on different kinds of paper.
This one is on Canson XL mixed media paper with a gritty surface.
What I like about this paper is that the grittyness of it gives the painting a softer appearence that, in my opinion, goes well with the pastel medium.

This #urbansketching is from the coffee bar at the local indy cafe. When it's too crowded and I don't get to sit at a table, there's the coffee bar. Then I draw up close and try to not get noticed.

@peterdrake@mstdn.social I prefer a more smooth surface as I often draw with a fountainpen first. For the moment I have a Fabriano sketchbook "Drawing" 160 gsm. I draw on both sides. But my favourite paper is Canson 180gsm which I buy on a roll and make the sketchbooks myself. But I also just finished a spiral pad; Fabriano 200gsm and now I have a pad with 300 gsm where I can really pour water.

I spent an hour on a bench in the beautiful town of Goslar, Germany, doing a bit of sketching. As always, I wasn’t quite sure where the drawing was going, but just sitting there, playing around with ink and watercolor, is so relaxing that the result almost doesn’t matter. It’s a wonderful memory anyway.
