The first passenger run of the new G class tram today. And what a morning! Starting at Essendon Depot there was a media conference and gathering of politicians, project staff, drivers and many others to celebrate the big day. The first new tram class for Melbourne since the E class, these medium capacity trams will initially run on the route 59, followed by the 57 and 82. We rode it down to Flinders Street before it turned back to head up to Essendon Depot. Automated message on the tram just now asking people not to stand in the doorways, "... move into the main saloon as soon as possible". 'Saloon'??? That sounds strange. I have never heard a tram carriage called a 'saloon' by anyone. #Melbourne #trams

Tucked away in the woodlands of Pennsylvania lies a unique fleet of streamlined 1930s and 1950s streetcars. These St Louis and Pullman-Standard carriages have glorious vintage Americana vibes. Many of these date to the height of the Streamline Moderne era. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿📔🚍🚆🚈🚇 The #UK #Government has launched a new national #transport strategy aimed at making journeys across #England simpler, cheaper and better connected. It will give local leaders powers and funding to expand contactless “tap-and-go” travel across #buses, #trains and #trams, building on systems in cities such as #London and #Nottingham. The plan includes over 40 commitments, alongside measures to keep travel affordable, such as fare caps and fuel duty freezes. A new partnership with Google will provide real-time bus tracking via Google Maps, particularly benefiting rural areas. Other initiatives include a £6 million Peak District pilot to better link buses and trains, and expansion of a national parking platform to simplify payments. A Department for #Transport study explored why people choose multi-modal journeys combining #buses, #trains, or #trams. Research with 67 participants (online, interviews, focus groups) found #travel choices are mainly influenced by convenience, cost, comfort, and safety, while #sustainability rarely affects local trips. Barriers include unreliable services, poorly aligned timetables, high planning effort, and unclear real-time information. Enablers include frequent services and contactless payments.
