The latest release of Reconnect, my #psion connectivity suite for macOS, is out with support for incremental backups, making it even easier to protect your precious files. Reconnect will need to perform an initial full backup but, after that, it should only back up the files that have changed. It takes backups of my Series 7 from about an hour, down to roughly a minute. Download it from https://reconnect.jbmorley.co.uk and check out https://reconnect.jbmorley.co.uk/docs/backup/ if you're interested in the technical details.

Since returning from my travels, I've been continuing to push on with various software and hardware projects. Last week, I released an update to Reconnect—my modern Psion connectivity suite for macOS—which adds support for restoring backups, to both EPOC16 and EPOC32 devices. It's a perfect time to get back into the world of #psion devices. https://reconnect.jbmorley.co.uk

BLOG: Make It Right - Next Steps With CTRAN Rather than go straight into some of the more technical issues I've been facing, I've just written a quick recap on my rewrite of Psion's weird OO C preprocessor, and where I'm heading next with it and the rest of the SIBO C SDK. https://thelastpsion.com/posts/make-it-right-next-steps-with-ctran/ #CTRAN #Psion #SIBOSDK

Missed this over the weekend. David Potter, the man behind Psion Computers has died. When the university computers were crap, I thought "Sod this, I'll use my Series 3 organiser to write my dissertation". And I did. Bloody minded Brummie and all that 😀 Wonderful hardware and software. No bloat, ran for hours on 2 AA batteries and no ads, pop ups or garbage that we have online these days. Rest in peace David. Psion products were the gateway for so many of us into the world of tech. Thank you, Sir. https://www.theregister.com/personal-tech/2026/07/03/david-potter-the-man-who-put-psion-in-the-palm-of-your-hand-logs-off-at-82/5266624 #Psion #Series3 #DavidPotter

Replying to @captainblack@hachyderm.io
@captainblack@hachyderm.io Oh, that's sad to hear. I loved my Series 5. Even when I could afford a real laptop later, I used the Psion often because it was so practical. Some years ago I bought the Planet Cosmo Communicator because I hoped to get this feeling and usability back, but Android is far from what Psion did. #psion

David Potter, the man who put Psion in the palm of your hand, logs off at 82

“South African-born pioneer of the British tech industry David Potter, the man behind the iconic Psion pocket computers, passed away on 28th June, six days before his 83rd birthday. Potter was the founder of the company of the same name, a pivotal firm in the British technology industry from the 1980s to the 2000s. Psion supplied software for the early computers from Sinclair Research, the ZX80 and the ZX81, including a Flight Simulator that you can play online. In 1982, Psion supplied the bundled software with the Sinclair ZX Spectrum, and the later, the XChange suite for the Sinclair QL, later available for DOS under the name PC-Four.” I fondly remember my Psion 5, and actually even the offices I bought it from in Cape Town, right next to the Kenilworth racecourse. But the linked article is very interesting to read, as I did not realise the connection with Sinclair Research (the ZX81 was my first commercial computer I ever bought). And of course Symbian became famous also with Nokia. Another thing I never knew, was how the name Psion came about. A spoiler is that P stands for Potter, but as a tech nerd the name was clearly not very glossy PR stuff we think of around Apple products etc today. But Potter certainly deserves to be called a pioneer of early IT. He innovated in the years when small start-ups all competed with each other, and there were no multi-million Dollar buy-outs or takeovers, and unlimited cash let you dominate the industry. One of my many sidequests is to try to get #NetBSD running on one of my #Psion Series 5mx machines. But I have a few issues/thoughts: I'm struggling to find instructions on how to do this. (Can you help, @netbsd@mastodon.sdf.org ?)Because I can't find any instructions (granted, I was very tired when I tried last night), I'm a little worried that no one has tried this for quite some time. Both of my 5mx units and my working S5 are refusing to read any of my seven Compact Flash cards. Including the one that the netBook uses to boot. I have no idea how to fix that, and I don't really want to buy another 5mx as they ain't cheap. The winning 5mx will get a RAM upgrade to 32MB. (Yes, that's doable.) If I can get something working, then that will encourage others in the #PsionCommunity to try. So we might actually get people running a modern OS on Series 5 machines. Also, as there are a good number of programmers in that community, we might get more eyes on the code. Finally, if that all works out, then it might be possible to get it running on the (currently unsupported) netBook, too. #Psion5mx #retrocomputing

You can emulate #Dragonfell on modern systems via DOSBox and a free #PsionSeries3 emulator for #msdos. There's an emulation package that provides step-by-step instructions for obtaining and installing the two emulators, as well as a version of the game packaged specifically for those emulators. Future plans might possibly include an #msdos #cga version of the game, but in the mean time, this is a good solution. Get it from https://cyningstan.itch.io/dragonfell-psion-3 #Psion
