Questions for people who control their environmental temperatures with heat pumps (and only people with first-hand experience):

  1. What is the optimal operating temperature range for your heat pump? (I.e., lowest temp it operates in efficiently for heating, highest temp for cooling)

  2. When you can't use it because temperatures are outside that range, what do you use a back-up heating and cooling alternatives?

it is done, all is well, & i seem to have survived 💃🥳🎉 now, approaching 7pm, i am luxuriating in my new heating; space & water. It's all lovely! They were here 0700 - ~1500, having done much better than their original estimate [1700]. All the blokes were fabulous with me, entirely natural & completely unstaged... almost as if they did not know! 😮🤔🤷 I feel very happy atm... & tbh, a little bit proud of myself for finally doing this [10 years in the making, sigh]! all the equipment is, frankly, amazeballs. really impressive engineering. i feel so lucky to have been in a position to have [belatedly] done this, as i fully recognise so many cannot, & have challenges far greater than whingie little me. well, i seem unable to do so many normal life things, but by doing this, finally i can feel content that i'm pulling my weight a little, no longer burning gas & killing Gaia... & us 🥺 #dropbearelectrification #heating #heatpumps #climatecrisis

I'm looking into complete #heating system inc #SolarPV + diverter or PVT while renovating an old property which currently lacks heating. All walls will have improved isolation but I'm not sure whether a #HeatPump is a good idea as we like it warm ~23C, so oil is the alternative. The house is mostly North facing (in SW UK), has a very old core (40cm stone walls) a less old section and two 1970's era extensions. A mixed bag! Thoughts and hashtags to follow welcome. #Renovation #Solar

@mlanger@mastodon.world Yes, propane! Most #narrowboats have #propane #cookers. It can also be used for #heating. Alde is probably the leading brand for producing #propane boilers for boats that will run radiators as a #domestic #boiler will. #Diesel #heaters are also popular. Eberspacher and Webasto being the main brands though many fit very competitively priced Chinese units, but I read somewhere that they are not approved for marine use and should they start a fire insurance would be invalid. A few #liveaboard boaters have larger Aga or Rayburn oil or solid fuel fired cookers that will also drive radiators I referred to #cooker rather than #stove deliberately. Almost all privately owned narrow boats have small traditional style #solidfuel (wood/coal) stoves fitted. On 19th century #boats theses would have been used both for heating and cooking. On modern boats they are usually stand alone heaters in the saloon, but some will be fitted with boilers and drive radiators elsewhere on the boat.
