We mentioned the closure of Mastodon.cloud yesterday. We've looked into it a little bit more and uhm... they've been looking for someone to take over? It may be too late, but if u are okay spending "about $800" a month on what we would consider a def rehab project... maybe ask? Dear admins, mods, and modmins... Alas, the same "open registration" instances are used over and over again to harass and troll the fedi. Yes, we understand the arguments for allowing open registration. But tbh? We find those arguments unconvincing given the abuse we see. The fedi has a serial troll / spammer problem and open registration contributes to its continuation. Offering them the means to register and immediately harass people makes for a less friendly fediverse, not a more friendly one. Reviewing a "reason for joining" before approving an account is not too much to ask. If it is, then we respectfully suggest that the instance has either too many members or too few moderators. When an instance becomes a go-to for trolls because it offers instant access, that instance creates work for every other federated instance, makes fedizens into victims, and feeds the trolls' need for attention. That there is such a simple solution (manual approval / vibe check) is kind of infuriating at times. We know that this plea / request will not convince those driven by growth and open registration no matter the cost to the fedi community. But if we convince at least one open registration instance to switch to screened approvals, we will consider it a win. Lastly: If you're on an open reg instance, we suggest POLITELY asking your admin / mods to change their policy. #fedi #FediMods #FediModerator #FediAdmin

Hallo Mods und Admins. Wir bekommen häufiger englischsprachige Anmeldewünsche, in der der Nick z.B. aus maximal 2 Buchstaben plus 6 Zahlen bestehen (oder Variationen davon). Domain ist gmail und der Text ist nichtssagend. Wir vermuten mögliche Geisterkonten, um später Spam oder ähnliches zu initiieren. #FediBlock I limited* gaygeek.social for failing to handle their dav1d problem. Open signup servers are a liability for the whole Fediverse, cause triggers and retraumatizations through toxic trolls, cause stress and burnout for admins and mods on other servers and make no sense outside a capitalist growth mindset. *unfortunately limiting is a mostly useless feature and therefore more of a symbolic act. Something I believe may be warrant discussion is how each instance is beholden to the rules of another by virtue of federation. Something that has given way to vibes-based reporting which our administrator has been unable to act on. This has, unfortunately, resulted in the slander of our instance. Branded as allegedly being "anti-moderation" and "bigoted" for choosing not to punish their users over frivolous reports or engage in the fediblock of the more fringe or controversial instances on here ourselves. So Fedizens, what are your thoughts?
