As i sit on the Bangalore office on Day 4 of 5, some valuable lessons I think I knew but had forgotton because of the lack of travel..

  1. My work Windows laptop the HP Elitebook people who use outlook edition has 3hrs battery life.. I had to charge it twice.
  2. USB2.0 is king outside of my tech bubble. While all of my (and probably most of your) devices are new USB3.0 the outside world still relies on USB2.0 connectors in planes and power strips in offices.
  3. I've moved my work life for this trip to my Samsung tablet (Onenote, Outlook, Teams and Edge) because its easier to take hand written notes in meetings.
  4. No one likes the smart arse with the little rectangle thing recording the meeting and transcriing it with AI..
  5. Having plex and youtube media downloaded to the same tablet is a life saver..
  6. Saily, Nomad choose what you will, a local eSIM is a requirement... especially with tethering..

Some other things ive noted about India in no particular order

  • Paying with a QR code is a thing.. had an issue paying for the Uber from the Airport to the hotel because only Revolt provides such a service
  • Doing anything from buying a McDonalds to getting a vistors visa requires a local phone number..
  • Potholes take priority over actual usable roads in Bangalores suburbs
  • I've eaten soooo much local food, and its all soooo good.

Tonight's activities included, Resolving an issue with corrupt keys files on #cachyos stopping updates. Resolving an issue with #termix which was timing out on my #k8s and fixing ghis also fixed an issue with the Android app I got #patchmon installed and rolled out security and other patches Tomorrow I need to setup my old #imac (intel) as a #devops server (probably ubuntu 2404 desktop) and install #argocd and see if i can get that to work with my k8s setup.. Oh, and we walked the dog 6km in the morning... Got next week off.. so got some housekeeping to do.. #daveknowstech #selfhosted

In a dick move, I migrated to my new laptop and hadn't pushed my helm charts to #gitea Thankfully via #warp.dev and #gpt5 i was able to rebuild my #helm charts which are now up on gitea and accessible by helm. Tomorrow my intent is to get #argocd installed and see how this #cicd pipeline works #daveknowstech #selfhosted #homelab

Just bought an HP zbook g8 with 128gb ram, this beast has the capacity for 4 x m.2 ssd drives. The gpu is a slight step up from my Dell 5550. I will repurpose my dell into a proxmox host with a k8s test environment on it.. #daveknowstech

I feel somewhat bare, backups have been made, core services moved to a single #proxmox next stage is to re-purpose the proxmox cluster ready to deploy kubernetes via #rancher on the nodes Then, with the help of #ai setup help charts for my apps and figure out how to use #gitea to host them and pipeline for updates Love a bank holiday weekend tech project #daveknowstech #selfhosted #homelab

Tonight's fun was trying to speed up #perplexica on a local homelab install with ollama, I run it on a mac mini m4, 16gb so am limited in models I can use, however 3 minutes to tell me how to make a pizza across multiple models seemed slow.. It was, same question, same #ollama, same models on #AnythingLLM 15 seconds.. I have ended up keeping the #searxng install which was quick and works well. Tomorrow I want to work out more about anything llm and RAG and the any cli that it has, as if I can do what I need to using that, I might move over from warp.dev to tabby with any cli.. Lets see.. Also seems like #lens has added more agentic on its #kubernetes app, interested to see what that might do Also might move from #docker to #podman and spin up a local 3 node k8s cluster on the laptop too. That would be good to test my latest vibe app out Love a weekend... #daveknowstech #selfhosted #homelab

Been thinking about #vibecoding and the backlash it gets in some sections of the internet. Its no different to thousands of other slop projects on places like github really other than the person may get further with coding their passion project with the help of an AI. At this level it's a good thing, when trying to ship something as a viable commercial product that's not security tested, that's not so good #ai #daveknowstech

Im on day 100 of using #cachyos and as a 20 plus year distrohopper that's a good thing. I would say even for a linux newbie, this is the distro of choice.. https://cachyos.org/ #daveknowstech #linux #arch #linuxdistro
