I will continue to use all the ones I use now, including Tutanotan and Proton, but it would make it easier to listen to someone else's needs and opinions and decide how to advise them.

Virtually all land on earth is on the other side of the world from the center of the Pacific Ocean. At somewhere out there in the middle, there's a little string of islands called Hawaii. It gets me to the same repositories and the same applications, and refreshes on command instead of at some time schedule that is not under my control.

@dw_innovation@mastodon.social @hackernoon@mas.to I first read the evaluations of the people testing the Automated Incompetence engines and read someone who spent six hours getting results and debugging results from such a machine to accomplish an uncommon but relatively simple task. The machine never gave a correct answer, but over time its answers got better, and it finally gave one that could be fixed by any competent coder. But any competent coder could probably solve the problem ad hoc in 20 minutes by working without AI. At that point, I determined never to waste my time with Automated Incompetence.

@winkwinkerson@mastodon.social Okay, then let me make my position clear. I thought that work on creating the Apple computer was brilliant and I think the Apple 2 was brilliant. And there was a huge culture of experimenters and developers that worked on modified hardware for those and versions of those that would do more things, and software for those that was truly exciting. And they totally abandoned that community and culture after that, to chase the money. They adopted a policy of lock-in and lockout. And I hate that.

That Google fell to corruption and died and is no more. And the new Google under Alphabet has made itself a single point of failure for everything it does. Clearly then, all sensible people should avoid it whenever possible.

@ee @Tutanota I think this is a good and wonderful thing, and it will probably make some difference for everybody, regardless of how broad they are. But, I was just curious to know. I think the assumption that they mean anyone outside the EU or outside of the vicinity of Germany is probably a valid one. But regardless of that, it is a very good thing that they're still making improvements and to making progress. That is key.

@ee @Tutanota That was my first thought. But the I have to wonder what they REALLY mean. Because when you have clients all over the world, it is important to specify. And people who live in different places mean different things when they say abroad Among all the English-speaking people, it seems to match the definition, but the definition leaves a bit of ambiguity. Especially if you live on an island or an island continent. (I lived for a time on an island in Lake Michigan. There's even one place where you can live on an island in a lake that's inside an island that's in a lake. And the meanings of definitions start to get a little confused.)

Where, if she got speaking too fast, she would begin in one sentence, skip the end of that sentence and the beginning of the next, and finish end of that next sentence, so that it made almost totally no sense at all unless you were following her thoughts rather than her words. And every time she did that, Dad would just smile at her.

@tempusfelix @azonenberg @ahltorp The MRP and LRP meals are dried, even things that are liquid are so heavily extracted that you need to drink a lot of water if you consume them. C-Rats were a bit better because they had things actually in cans. But they also contained some dehydrated food products. I specifically remember the beef patty. It looked vaguely like a burger, but if you couldn't rehydrate it and had to just eat it dry, it was a dog biscuit. If you've stored dehydrated foods and you haven't stored a water processing unit, you're just fooling yourself.

@isagalaev @wezm I think not. To properly use the seasons, you have to qualify them. Even in the northern hemisphere. I'm in the USA, and if I'm talking winter new Mexico, that's the 62 day period when you might get snow in the morning, but it will be gone by noon. If you're talking winter in some parts of Alaska, you're talking about the best nine months of the year. And of course, if you're talking about anywhere in the Southern Hemisphere you have totally flipped expectations unless you say where it is in the southern hemisphere. Why is it so hard for people to figure out that the planet is a globe?

Now the site only presents age-appropriate material, right? Personally, if you make four individual panels and join them in a post, that's much easier for me to read because I'm older than some rocks. But the more important thing to me is do you enjoy what you're doing, and are you doing it in a way that avoids burning you out? Because what format you choose to post it in is far less painful than having you burn out and stop posting!

@drmikepj actually, helicopters can be used for city center to city center travel. Other than hospital to hospital, they're not used very much for that, but they can be. It just costs a frig-ton of money to do it. I remember reading some articles from before my time where, before helicopters, they thought that autogyros, which are a simpler technology, would be the commuter car of the future. I seriously wish they had put their efforts, imagination and money into building better mass transit. We could use more local electric trains.

She would go in and wind around his feet and get thoroughly soaked and seemingly be very happy. And then one day she did something she had never done before. She looked up. When the screaming paused, we made it to the bathroom and could see his head above the stall door and the cat was on top of his head and there was blood running down the drain. That was the last time the cat was allowed in the shower.
