Can we all please agree on a “that’ll do” point for everything? I don’t need a new phone with a 128 megapixel camera, monolith sized screen and enough storage to keep a copy of the British library. I want the thing to fit in my bag or pocket and just…work. I don’t need constant improvements to software, I just want it to work and not spy on me. I don’t need a car that will pretend to drive itself, I need a car with low or no emissions and good public transport or cycling routes. We all know the “that’ll do” point and we all know we’ve gone past it. The only things we should constantly strive to improve is healthcare and environmental regeneration. But I suppose that doesn’t fit into the tech bro profit model.

Okie dokie vegans. How do you make lasagne? My partner made the best lasagne (not Biased) but of course it’s meat based. We have a vegan sauce for the white sauce but can’t do the layers for the bolognese type bit. We have a tomato based sauce butI can’t eat aubergines, courgettes and most nightshades so it’s lacking in texture somewhat. #vegan

This is interesting. It’s so dry here that you can see the extent of a trees main root system.

Under the shade of the tree, but not under the canopy, the grass is long, quite lush and green. It is getting dried out and it is failing slowly with the drought.

Closer to the tree and under the canopy, the grass is shorter, drier and dying off faster .

Note that is hasn’t rained for months so this isn’t a rain shelter thing and it hasn’t been grazed oddly. The whole field was harrowed and fertilised and up until a couple of weeks ago this wasn’t visible.

The tree itself remains in leaf, but it is already dropping beech nuts.

The very dry area is where the sheep have been so it has been grazed hard. They’re already on the winter hay so it’s going to be a long winter.

I find it extraordinary how people out themselves in a single sentence.

Passing conversation with a neighbour and they unjokingly say they’re glad it’s sunny again.

To which I said I could do with some rain.

Oh no, I prefer it dry is their reply.

And with that they put themselves as contextually unaware.

Really? Dry? Yeah, rain all the time means flooding, waterlogged fields, and other difficulties. You can’t harvest wet grain, you can’t cultivate a wet field.

But a wet field can’t catch fire, a field so dry you can’t harvest it means no food either. No grass means farmers are already using their winter feed for animal welfare now.

We can store and manage rain and if we have the planning, could build infrastructure to support it. But you can’t out work the heat and the dry.

So yeah, enjoy the sun but look around.

As Sue says, full, the big ones hold over 1000L, so over the tonne. Probably 1100kg full. I have them on concrete block plinths.

@Janet_52square@sunny.garden I agree. Down south im at risk of losing fruit trees which went in a few years ago and have already lost a fair bit of my food crops due to the drought. Hand watering due to hosepipe restrictions but you can only do so much. The berries are early in the hedges but signs indicate a wild and mild autumn so the woods are going to be treacherous with all the weakened root plates on the old standards. Planting trees to offset your carbon output only works if the woodlands are going to live and even then it’s gambling on the future.

If it works I may well make it CC licensed so any collective can make them locally. Petition signed. This is a problem that is only going get worse until we put the power back in the hands of the folx who have to do the tasks.

@afewbugs@social.coop TLDR: hard stops are difficult to enforce, due to temp and humidity combinations, but there should a framework of time limited exposure and building alterations to protect people. HSE documents say that the employer must provide a safe working environment but most of it was written before all this heat really kicked off, hence the focus on cold. I know that the new Green MP is putting a motion before parliament about max heat and my feeling is that it would be difficult to enforce a max temp, but we should enforce a max wet globe bulb temp as that is the human safety factor and accounts for humidity and ventilation. I would envisage that allowing bakeries to expose people to short term high temps (opening the ovens) but with a time based hard limit on total WGBT as these already exist in the military so the research is there. As for commercial and smaller businesses, I get the difficulty with them being able to afford the cooling kit and I know that my local independent bookshop and coffee shops would both have difficulty installing due to their buildings and locations. Passive solar management is possible though so it could be argued that the owner of the site should be responsible for installing external features to do this.

@futurebird@sauropods.win Absolutely agree. The pain that lurks in the background, constantly gnawing at your soul can be more debilitating that short lived acute pain and can be much harder to manage. I have seen pain etch away people, neurogenic from spinal injury but very real in every sense. As you say, it changes them. Always believe the person when they tell you, they know themselves best. And sometimes the hardest thing is when there is no obvious solution to that pain, it can be really hard to admit that.

@futurebird@sauropods.win The pain from the compression of the swelling was possibly caused by the ischemia (blood being cut off) in the foot, so you might have been getting a loop where blood flowed in, tissue swelled, compression meant the blood couldn’t flow out and so forth. Ischemix pain is very very real as not only is the swelling causing pain but the damage to the tissues is as well. And, as someone else said, there can be nerve compression as well. I’m glad they opened the cast, often we used clamshell casting to allow some space for the limb to swell for that reason.

When I listen to people ranting about socialist plots and far left loonies, I wonder if they actually remember the past? The miners standing up to thatcher, the strikes, the madness of the Cold War, the guys and girls in donkey jackets flogging socialist worker and morning star, the power the unions had and the changes that they made. Yeah, sometimes the union leaders weren’t great people but we have so much to thank real socialists for.

Today I am at an athletics competition. Loads of young people being awesome. And it’s a positive reinforcement that in spite of the so called adults absolutely screwing it all up for everyone, there is still hope in the youth. We need to support youth activities, and help those who will eventually have to help us.

Bugger the lot of them. Happiness is a hot forge, and I can’t be doing with the news at the moment and in spite of the arm/neck issues I needed to pick up a hammer.

Made a couple of door hooks, fixed a garden half moon edger someone had decided to use as a spade and make myself a weed yeeter. Also known as a weed slasher, it’s a long flat bar with a blade at the end. Add a wooden handle and it looks rather splendid. The wood is preserved with a dressing bar made of linseed oil, beeswax and lanolin. I use that bar to dress everything from waxed jackets to metal and wooden tools. The old ways still work better than many modern solutions.

As well as the joy of solving a problem with something I made myself, I love the idea that this will allow me to manage thistles and nettles without power and it’ll last much longer than I will, perhaps just a new handle occasionally.

Your problem isn’t immigrants, or AI or transfolx or any other target. But you already knew that.

It’s the sharks in sharp suits or football shirts who circle round and don’t want you to see the truth.

That it’s always been the man behind the curtain you need to watch, not the puppets on the strings, it’s the bloke next door, or down the street, the politician, CEO not cleaner.

They’re the ones who cast looks lascivious, or blame their wives or fire staff when profits drop then beat the rest to work harder. All while screaming gammon red that the others are to blame.

We need to unpick the threads woven deep that these predators use to hide behind, but that, that is hard, boring and tedious work.

So heads up, they’ve shown their face and now we know their plans. Now we must decide. Get gritty.

@zackwhittaker @dmehro In the UK a lot of our health services are accessed through the NHS app. It used to be based on the handset but has now become a web based portal. And it really really wants you to use chrome mobile. It’s leaky as heck and seeing as it can root access your personal letters, prescriptions and appointments, goodness knows what the marketing and targeting third parties can see.

@fesshole@mastodon.social Ah, you went to the hall on the wrong night. The public face of the Masons is charitable acts and fraternity. The Elucidated Brethren of the Ebon Night are the ones for rituals and dragon summoning. They’re on Tuesdays. A cold wind is ushered in as the geese fly forth on their quest north.

@wbpeckham UK based so my only experience is our 24 hour bags, which are all ready to eat or ready to heat. The only thing you tended to make up was porridge. Lots of curry based packs so you’d get scraps over the all day breakfast and stews after a while. I get why dehydrated works for carrying weight (every ounce you save is more rounds or happier knees) but as you say, you need water.

@Ailbhe In my experience, the dried foods are only suitable for hiking where you can filter the water but don’t want to carry the weight. But, because a lot of the prep community come from a .mil background they have that mentality and the logistics guys sort out water. Canned food always worked in the past, tastes a lot better and as you say, don’t need extra fluid to make them palatable. Edit to add a story. I was part of the training and medical staff on a week long mil exercise. As I was staff I had privileges which meant I could put a couple of crates in the logistics system for comfort rather than having to carry everything in my Bergen (rucksack). And as well as my kit needed for the role, mine did indeed include some tinned food (soups), homemade bread, an energy cake and a camp bed. The rationale being that as staff we needed to be in better condition to keep everyone else safe. Suffice to say my dinners of ration packs supplemented with bread were envied. After a while those things get boring fast and mess up your gut.

@azonenberg @ahltorp For me, biggest (in every way) issue, and one that you have mentioned, is water. We have a water based system. Consumption, cooking, hygiene, medical care all uses copious amounts of water, even if you’re trying to be careful. If you have 4 humans in a property you will likely use 25L of clean water for consumption and personal care alone per day. That doesn’t include toilets, anything other than a military wash and so forth. I have some bottled water stored for drinking only but to carry a week of water is hundreds of litres. And where we live is water on demand driven by the utilities electric pumps so we often get issues when the power fails. I’ve seen some very clever and basic systems but can’t implement them due to the property.

@UkeleleEric @scroeser Some context for finding it challenging to give just money. This is just for me. Anything people do to help rough sleepers or beggars makes a positive difference. 1) there is an issue in some large cities in the UK where organised crime gangs send people out to beg, essentially as modern slavery. The big issue charity has done some work to help address this but more needs to be done. 2) how much is enough? A quid, 2 quid, the price of a shelter for the night? The shrapnel at the bottom of your purse? It’s kind of like the parable of the blind widow. 3) not always having cash on us in appropriate denominations, the government wants a cashless society for many reasons. Big issue sellers now carry card machines and mobile phones! 4) I don’t care what they spend it on. Adults do as adults do. If a drink eases the pain then so be it, I used to drink to mask pain, the only difference between me and them was a bed to sleep in. And losing that’s only 3 fuckups away. Carrying a few little bags that might bring some help and a some loose change maybe made a difference. Just seeing them and spending a moment recognising their humanity. I don’t go out as much any more and in London particularly rough sleepers are hiding more due to the hostile nature of the built environment and private security wanting to keep their bit of Mayfair tidy. As a final thought, I’m sure given the current bullshit austerity measures, the constant cutting of mental health services and welfare nets will lead to an uptick in homelessness, especially hidden homelessness in women and children. If you can, support your local food bank, give to women’s refuges, recognise the human next to you. It’s what drives those with dark intentions mad.

@scroeser I think the fact that the young are asking and seeing is a positive. They’re not learning to be wilfully blind. A story and an idea. Pre pandemic, when we went out a lot more and especially up to london, and could afford it, we’d carry little cheap cloth bags to give to street sleepers. If I remember, they contained some sanitary pads for the women (we had a few of each), a small bar of soap, a Mylar (emergency blanket), mini first aid kit, a led micro torch and a cigarette lighter. We didn’t put food in, and the whole thing probably cost a couple of quid as we bought bulk from Costco. I’d had bad experiences buying food for street people (memorably one guy outside a hospital getting aggressive and rejecting the sandwich and coffee he’d asked me for as it was the wrong sort of cheese, I’m assuming mental health crisis) and these seemed to go well, especially the thermal blanket. As you say, theres not much we can do for street sleepers, we never know why they’re there and just giving money can be challenging. But these pouches seemed an option for us and we would often hand out a couple each trip. These days we have a crate outside the front door for delivery drivers and postal workers. It contains water, food bars and a few other thank you items (tissues etc) for anyone who needs them. Thankfully we live in an area where the local teens aren’t likely to steal the lot and we know it goes down well. Those folk get worked hard with no breaks and it seems the least we can offer to support them. Probably costs us ten pounds a month and they save us more than that in fuel and stress.

@KathyReid@aus.social 2 initiator points 1) the appearance of the smartphone lowering the intellectual cost of entry. 2) the rise of Facebook and google following the ease of entry leading to the realisation that profit could be made. When you had to put in effort to connect to something, you tended to value and try to understand it. When it becomes seamless and pervasive, the value is lowered and it becomes a tool for profit. So about 2010.

@MostlyHarmless I prefer to prescribe mountain air, theres fewer people around and there is more often a good pub to offer company and hearty meals for the traveller before an evening of firelight and community gossip. However. If that sounds like your thing then I recommend at least 3 weeks in the hope valley, which will help the nerves and constitution considerably.

@Daojoan One of the original guys for all of that was Tim Ferris. Dropshipping, passive income, catchy books, podcasts… but if you look beneath the hood even he doesn’t fully believe his hype, he just figures out how to tweak systems. Then others take the top layer model and boom, we’re all suffering. I’m pleased I found your piece, it framed a lot of the concerns I’d not quite verbalised.
