@pathfinder It's not great in Ireland either; some people are lucky enough to have partners or children or neighbours who want to help and have the resources, and some... die in a puddle of wee in a mouldy flat.

@pathfinder @autistics Nobody is actually independent, really; we live interlaced lives and rely on all kinds of community and infrastructure. What I think that old lady might have had which others don't is autonomy. People helped her to do the things she wanted to do, not constrained her. Absolutely lovely and I hope to achieve it myself, somehow.

@tempusfelix Water is why I don't understand having dried foods as one's Prep. They need both fuel and water to make them edible. Canned things which are safe to eat cold are safer, and contain some fluid of their own, which reduces the strain on the water hoard.

@cherizilla @TeaKayB Just realised, one thing worth noting is that we all sync over WiFi through the household ebook server (household not personal because de-drm and share everything, like with real books) but can still access the Kobo shop and buy and download new things fine. It involved changing one line on the Kobo itself and then it was easy. It might be even easier if you're happy to use a wire and only have one person using the server.

@cherizilla @TeaKayB I loved the idea of Boox but the household got two different kinds and used neither, whereas we are all using Kobo + Calibre fairly easily. Wireless sync with calibre feels seamless.

@toni@zug.network @futurebird@sauropods.win My current browser doesn't show the full URL in the URL bar, only the domain - so I see only "mendeddrum.org" and no http:// or /home/index.html or whatever. Those aren't obvious any more unless I look for them.
And to younger people, that feels normal.

@stavvers@masto.ai this kind of works. If you're interested in babies there are loads of things about them to think about and talk about but they're details people who aren't interested in babies qua babies can't even distinguish, let alone understand, so you can't talk about them with most people.
