Mac App Store version is waiting for review.
There's a new version of Iris Photos available today. In addition to a ton of bug fixes and improvements, I went a little overboard after adding custom app icons. Now you can add your favorite people...to the macOS Dock.

@emorydunn@mastodon.tinycart.club That seems...reasonable(?)...based on my testing with ~200k item library. The bulk of the time will be from the ML face/tagging. Getting through EXIF scanning should be much faster.
Is that way more time than you expected?
(Also, that time estimate is new and I don't have much data yet on how accurate it is.)

A new TestFlight build of Iris is available. My favorite new feature of this release...
When you select a person in the sidebar, the inspector will show details about them. Including the oldest and youngest photo and even a list of who they are most commonly photographed with.
Are you not taking enough pictures of your kids with their grandparents? Iris can tell you that.

Oh, and if you see a purple arrow next to a photo on the map, that's the direction the camera was facing.
The next Iris TestFlight update includes Photo Trails. What's that?
When you zoom in on a map, we'll literally connect the dots so you can retrace your steps with your photos.
A few years ago we took our kids to Disney World. Here's a look at the day we spent walking around Magic Kingdom.
While building this feature, I had so much fun discovering old hikes, vacations, and road trips. It's an extra layer of context that would otherwise go missing.

@squaredpx@phpc.social While working on this app, I learned that photos and their live video files have (undocumented) ID numbers in their EXIF that are supposed to allow matching pairs together.

@squaredpx@phpc.social Iris has half-baked support for merging image with their live photo companion when sourced from Apple Photos. But it doesn't handle that problem well when sourced from a regular folder. I'll add that to my list.

@nileane@nileane.fr Iris never modifies or moves your files. When you add a new source (you can have multiple sources!), the app generates thumbnails and indexes everything it can about your photos and videos.
Once that's done, you're free to eject the drive and go hide it in your attic or bank vault. You can then keep browsing and searching your library with Iris. Only need to re-attach the drive if you want the original files.
It's designed this way for folks (like me!) who don't have enough internal Mac storage for all their photos. It's also super helpful because when you do go looking for a specific photo, Iris can tell you which drive it's on.

My library has ~250,000 items. When importing from an external ssd, a full analysis (which includes all the ML tagging and face detection) will take around 24-36 hours. The initial import (file scanning + EXIF data) is much faster.

Along those lines, for "fun" the other day, I asked Claude Max to review a UIKit codebase and spit out a product requirements doc and a technical specifications doc + "a prompt for another LLM agent to use those docs to produce a modern SwiftUI + modern Swift concurrency app". Ended up with all three markdown files. Fed those into a new Claude Max session, let it spin for an hour, and ended up with a surprisingly solid *working* version. Perfect? Not even close. But it really opened my eyes.
