Using Phocus for the first time in years and it’s not even remotely good software. Beachballed when scrolling through images, had trouble setting the capture folder, but worst of all has no meaningful export tokens. The only clever thing they have ways to differentiate between the filename and counter, which is something I’ve wanted in Capture One for years

@sudonem@infosec.exchange I’d very much like to incorporate all of the knobs and switches. I’ll need to find a more full-featured audio board (I was looking at the Louder-ESP32, but the shipping costs more than the board). I’d probably need to design PCBs for the knobs as well

I need to make some adjustments to the dummy head connectors, the mounting hole spacing isn’t quite right, especially when there are multiple side-by-side, which is why they don’t all have screws. That will be a tomorrow problem

Found a battery charger and some voltage regulators and put everything on a perf board. I also wired up the power switch and LED so the whole thing can actually be switched off and recharged without opening it up

I still want to make some improvements, mostly around power management. The battery can’t be charged, nor can the system be power off, without removing the front plate with six screws. The plan is to use the main power switch and wire in some battery cells with a charge controller. I’d also love to connect some of the interface dials to control volume or the EQ or something. That will require a new amp board and possibly some custom firmware

A project finished because of Open Sauce! One of the booths was a building custom speakers with old car stereo drivers, mostly as DIY projects for kids, and I mentioned I had a speaker project I was working on. He asked about the size and then handed me two drivers and a little Bluetooth amp board. Today I finished gutting the broken Profoto pack and “delicately” installed the board, speaker, and a random USB battery pack

I released a new update for Take Stock, my app for adding camera metadata to film scans, a little while ago and now there's a blog post to go with it!

Lots of Bug Fixes and Improvements. Really happy with where the app is now.

The real project for the day was another test shoot. This time doing a full rave for a candle. We didn’t have nearly as much of a concept this time other than leaning into the holographic effect in the glass of the candle. Mostly it was a test of the set design: we cut out a series of arches and suspended them with 3D printed brackets

Built a very basic button and jog wheel UI in very roughly the same configuration as the physical dial. Definitely calling this a win for Observation. Now I need to add actions for the button presses and dial events. Luckily I should be able to use some code from a previous physical input project to help with that #SwiftLang #SwiftUI

The best part is I finally figured out how the official app is changing the mode of the dial so it stops sending keyboard events. I'd figured it was some setup packet when the app connects, but no. It's nothing so elegant. Every second the app sends a packet which tells the device to not do keyboard events. If the dial stops getting those packets it reverts to being a keyboard

I did a little polishing on my test tool, mostly adding a packet decoder and logger. Every event is 20 bytes long, with the last 12 always identical. Even though the first 8 bytes are different for each event I can decode what button was pressed or released from the first byte, not sure what the other 7 are for.

My resounding success is slightly tempered by the fact I was able to toggle the haptics by sending two different data packets. Both work reliably, but that means I know even less about how this thing works, and I wasn’t exactly starting from knowing anything to begin with

First success with the packet sniffing! I'm able to enable and disable the haptics on the jog wheel. I had to switch from CoreHID to CoreBluetooth to pull more information from the device, which is a really clunky API

Continuing with the APIs I've changed from reading the raw report data to letting the system parse them into meaningful keyboard events and now all of the keys make sense. The dial is sending the full sequence of key presses to, for example press the command key, then c, and then release them. I think the next step is to figure out how to change the keys so I can more easily handle single events

So I did the key decoding the hard way. It's a keyboard and so the top row and dial just send normal media key codes. If I look at the standard keyboard HID spec I’ll probably learn why the side buttons are different. They map to copy, paste, undo, and redo by default

The device shows up as a keyboard (with battery life reporting!) and defaults to doing media control and volume. Looking at the report data it looks like the buttons are split into two groups. The side buttons are in report one and have nine bytes of data, whereas the top buttons and the dial are on report two with three bytes. Perhaps that has something to do with the default functions for the keys? Time to do decode the data for each button

A new little Bluetooth jog wheel has been going around the tech circles lately, so I figured I'd pick one up and try to reverse engineer it. While waiting for it to arrive over the weekend I downloaded the official app. It's 1.2 GB and written in Qt and ships its own copy of Node. Obviously
