Theoretical engineer (aerospace and biomedical), associate professor of continuum mechanics, ex-petrolhead turned eco-warrior (worrier?), FOSS advocate, non-competitive cyclist, general outdoor enthusiast, renaissance man, general in the AI resistance.

After multiple rounds of "restructuring" at my university, I decided to take the (in)voluntary severance offer and am now planning new adventures in SE Asia.

@Phosphenes@mastodon.social @daniel@colquitt.xyz @albertcardona@mathstodon.xyz Around 10% of students are severely dyslexic. The good thing for them is what the OP highlighted: the actual "reading" part (as in combining letter to words and sentences) is only a vanishingly small part of academic reading that even if they take much longer for that, the time spent on a paper to understand it is only marginally larger. That said: that's true for assigned reading. Once you need to do your own literature survey and decide if it's worth reading a paper fully, they need more rigorous reading strategies than their peers not to waste their time.

@riley@toot.cat @gerrymcgovern@mastodon.green Evaporation cooling is cheaper than liquid to air heat exchangers. So these data centres (unlike traditional HPC) do indeed "use" water by evaporation.

RE: @pluralistic@mamot.fr

Not the only reason to vote #Green, but even if environmental issues are not your main concern, this is one of the many reasons to vote for the Green Party over Labour.

Will do so after lunch.

@roastinghouse@mastodonapp.uk I'll share the image you posted here on Sheffield Hallam University's internal Social Media, if you don't mind. I missed the first two deliveries, so didn't see the cargo bike (was waiting for them, but they always come when I'm out). From the photo you shared it looks like it's non-electric. Impressive feat pedalling a loaded bike through Sheffield without assist 👍

Ok, I gave LLMs another try in doing meaningful work in my job.

a) the first attempt, indeed gives me a faster first draft than I could have done myself.
b) I need around a dozen iterations to get something that is somewhat OK.
c) I feel like I am middle-managing an untrustworthy person; or like I am working with a not-too-bright student, who needs everything spelled out three times.

Why would I want to do that?

1. I decided to NOT go into middle management (actually I used to be senior management - and some would argue that I still am, so there's that). So using AI does not appeal at all on that front. If one is not middle management, one may get something out of having a sycophantic liar as a report.
2. I'd rather spend the time with an actual student, who will take something away from the interaction even after the context window runs out.

@zappes @KimCrayton1 As does this one. If I compare black people I know, their attitude, skills, everything, with many of exactly those white people peddling the white supremacy BS, I see no evidence of white supremacy AT ALL. But a lot of evidence to the contrary (in the white supremacy population). Keep dancing...

@swelljoe @tokyo_0 @yaelwrites I'm not certain those extra prompts address the underlying problem. It may only take out the sycophantic language, but still deliver the same confirming content (at least it seems to do so in the limited testing I've done). If that's the case, these prompts make it worse, since they make it more difficult for you to detect and identify. Both consciously, but more important, subconsciously.

@nazokiyoubinbou @fj That's where libraries come in (the add is for libraries). It is difficult to get DRM free current books. So the options are (a) read books that are out of copyright (too old to be enticing to kids), (b) pirate digital books, (c) read paper books, which are easier to swap around with your friends, or (d) use your library, which may have digital books, but will have a vastly greater selection of paper books, because ebook contracts for libraries are extortions. It's easy to forget that access to ebooks is only easy for priviledged groups (either financially or digitally skilled).

With the next round of restructuring at my university it's my job on the line.

Looking for a new challenge. Within or (maybe preferred) without HE.

>30 years experience in teaching

Expertise is mathematical modelling (fluids and thermodynamics, but also other non-linear systems)

Looking for a role that aligns with my values, so something in sustainability, medical engineering,...
