@ben@werd.social You should also question the conventional idea of marketing efforts. From my POV, social media networks have largely sold themselves. Compared to other types of large services, I'd bet their marketing budgets are small. There is a trap (or cop-out) where a community of technical users, such as Linux enthusiasts, delude themselves into thinking they've got the stuff that people need, if only there was "marketing" or some other external factor. But it should come as no surprise that the fediverse is a social network of Linux enthusiasts, and they have brought their familiar UX attitudes with them.

@ben@werd.social If the Web as a protocol is just a technical detail to people, then what future does it have? Some protocols were meant to be user-facing... they have an actual UX. ActivityPub is also user-facing and its UX is poor. If this were not so, then fedi would not be languishing while another protocol with similar semantics (AT, Bluesky) is flourishing. The thing that stands out most for me is how Eugen claimed fedi is "effective communication", and yet complaints about fedi made ON fedi have been ignored, drowned out by questionable on-fedi boosterism. You need to acquire a vision for smooth operation and the kinds of fedi traps that non-technical users can find themselves in. And you should not be rejecting IETF-honored solutions only because you are millennials who are embarrassed to employ simple measures (like protocol handlers) that date back to the 90s. Some of the Mastodon workarounds for maintaining a users' login state are inexcusably complex and just begging for abuse.

But this kind of broken UX matters to most nontechnical users; it drives them away. Note how this doesn't affect Bluesky or other services that use similar https: links. That's because unlike fedi the address that handles the UI and logins is centralized (i.e. 'bsky.app').

Anyone who clicks on that link will end up at the wrong place. The 'ec.socialnetwork.europa.eu' web server won't recognize your fedi login, and if you use a native fedi app, there's no way for that link to take you to it. Fedi is like email, but didn't copy email's 'mailto:' protocol definition, allowing smooth UX across different sites and apps.

@pluralistic Um...... the Trump regime seems to be controlling Venezuelan and Iranian (and other fuel through the Strait of Hormuz) in addition to US exports. They say random things (so you can make fun of their "incompetence") while continuing to deny importing countries access to fuel. I think that they think this constriction of fuel shipments will set them up as kingmakers. The Trump regime has openly declared a regime-change policy vs European leaders.

@davetroy I do think that non-MAGAts are prone to denial about the Trump regime's ability to plan destructive acts from which it gains control and wealth. They misstate his goals constantly. TrumpCo's end game is probably to put most of the world's fossil and nuclear fuels under the control of a white nationalist axis that will eventually include Russia. And that control over resources will be used as a weapon like never before, primarily against liberal democracies and China.

Its unpopular (for now) but much of the public are willing to celebrate Trump for fixing problems he caused. He'll likely wait until the pain is acute enough in the public mind to make its remedy unmistakable in proximity to the mid-terms. Whether its brinkmanship or just reckless is debatable.

@n_dimension @dangoodin The jscrambler site seems to be saying that the "pixels" are actually programs that felch PII right off the pages where they exist. IDK what to think about that. Clearly the websites including that Tiktok/Meta code are allowing it and are in effect "sharing data with our partners". That points to a general and massive cultural failure in IT, not the least of which is the browser architecture that would allow 3rd party scripts to do this.

Feeling the pressure, Google then rolled out similar "Tracking Protection" in Chrome but with the infamous catch that you had to allow the browser itself to collect browsing data.

@n_dimension @dangoodin I haven't read jscrambler claims, but one significant mitigating factor vs tracking pixels is that an array of browsers (prompted by Firefox back in 2019) have turned to first-party isolation (FPI) caching techniques: each site you visit (as represented in your Location bar) has a separate cache associated with it so that 3rd-party trackers have to send you different pixels/cookies for each site you visit.

It also doesn't address what happens when other apps simply want to link to fedi content (without immediately sharing); a user clicking from a pdf or epub viewer or an email client, for instance, would be lost. All of this is very ragged and slipshod because IDK why... protocol handlers seem too old fashioned to this clique of devs.

@Mastodon What this new "button" seems to do is implement another dangerous band-aid that habituates users to login to M. at the prompting of foreign websites. If you think users are going to closely watch their location bars to ensure they are 'home' before typing their password, I've got news for you... From my limited use so far, it has a number of limitations that make it inferior to the UX for email or centralized sites.

The reason it works is because email has a protocol handler known as 'mailto:'. Its a simple URL definition that tells any program (esp. operating systems) where to handle a clicked link, such as your email client. A handler for ActivityPub should have been defined, but that detail was overlooked.
