Time to rewrite a slow Haskell dependency in C.

It's extremely intertwined with the existing codebase, so I can't really just rip out the whole thing and rewrite it. I have to incrementally refactor one piece at a time and keep a similar interface, which means lots of FFI use, so this'll be fun

Weekend project: make a tool to generate pixel art from 3d models/bone animations, like how Dead Cells did their animations I'm doing this in Odin and raylib right now, neither of which I've used before

I believe there's a little bit of that going on, but it's little enough for it to be significantly behind in many aspects. This is one reason why you should never listen to someone who says "if you ignore the training costs, company Y is profitable"

I really need to hold myself back from implementing a Wayland VNC server. I know there's wayvnc, but it's been crashing lately on my remaining Hyprland PC, and it doesn't support KDE (yes I regularly use Sway, Hyprland, and KDE)

The RFB (VNC) protocol is ridiculously simple compared to something like HTTP. The hard part would really be interfacing with the various desktop environments. XDG portals makes that a little easier but I'm not sure how much.

I really don't have time for this right now but it's soooo tempting

GitHub has been basically unusable in the browser for me the last 3 days. CSS doesn't load, refreshing or going back randomly breaks/fixes pages, etc. I'm very thankful my work is mostly on GitLab, but looking at libraries on GitHub has become nearly impossible

I've had temporary positions in academia for the past year which are ending soon, and with the current programming job market (and having gotten used to the entry-level academia salary) I'd take that in a heartbeat. I know lots of CS undergrads who are looking for low-paying positions and jobs in other fields to "ride out the storm" (if there's anything on the other side)

The fact that SWI-Prolog doesn't document things that are covered by the ISO standard would be understandable, however the fact that acquiring a copy of that standard costs 500 USD makes it incredibly annoying. I can't even find a solid grammar of even a full description of the types of comments that it supports beyond the fact that you can nest comments in SWI-Prolog and not in ISO

I suppose you could replace your browser shortcut with a script that removes it before launching the browser, but that sounds like a horrible fix, and who knows if it can be installed mid-session

@stevelieber@mastodon.social at least one of the 3 team members seems to have successfully launched Solder Ninja on crowd supply, and although I had never heard of it before, that gives me some hope that at least this will hopefully make it to launch. And after that point if things go South it should hopefully be modifiable by the community. My only concern is this line on their website: "We’ll share the files once the final version of the product is ready, to prevent malfunctions and avoid having multiple inconsistent versions." That leads me to worry that they might keep pushing back the "final version" and the company could go under before releasing the source code. Also licensing code through Creative Commons is very odd, and not recommended by CC (except for CC0)

@the_wub @teohhanhui @Gargron I really doubt it would get to that point, since at the very least the Tor Browser is based on Firefox and has to be able to remove the AI cruft, and I'm reasonably confident that it has enough backing to be able to remove that stuff regardless. It will always be possible to remove these things in forks, but they could make it much harder. Like with the tabs example, Zen has tabs in a side panel, and Floorp can place tabs below navigation, or even at the window bottom. Forks can still make it happen, but it's harder.
