@pheonix@hachyderm.io it would save me a lot of time and emails. Explaining to people that I will not support their grant applications because of all the errors in the research is painful. I know it's AI, but I feel happier asking people to correct their mistakes. Either they fess up or realise AI does not work for many things. Frustratingly I need them to get grants so I can invoice them later however there are certain things I place ahead of money. Makes me lucky I know. More frustratingly, as it turns out, applications get submitted anyway and often get the grants. This is a whole different problem though and definitely is not new.

@ChrisMayLA6@mastodon.me.uk for some reason I've never got on with LibreOffice. I use it for that sort of thing on my personal machines, have done for maybe 15 years now. I'd used open office for a few years prior. The physicist in me is fully behind LaTeX. Probably obviously I suppose. I want to like LibreOffice, I really do. Maybe I'm not a person who likes office software stuff. The thing is, I do not mind Microsoft office beyond it being Microsoft. I used it at school years ago so I'm irritated by it getting, largely, worse over time but it does not offend me too much using it professionally. Unfortunately I'd be happy to never use LibreOffice again however I love a spreadsheet. It's always my recommendation for non-Microsoft, I just wish I could enjoy it too.

@Nerde@beige.party Linner. Late dinner. Breakfast, dinner, tea is a hill I'd wear myself out on. I also view these as time-based titles. On a normal day I won't eat before 1300 which is dinner. Clearly, it's breakfast as it is, by definition, impossible to not start with breakfast. My brain hates both of these things. I refuse to say skip breakfast as I do not think it's possible. I also call my first meal dinner as it's the wrong time for breakfast. Stupid brain.🙁🤦🏻

Going back to the article several coffees and a work later I realise that I was distracted quantifying 16000 kWh. Half of me thinks it's a stupid number and 16 MWh would be more appropriate however I guess on an average reader level, kWh would be more relatable. The electron volt would, of course, be preferable to both. 🙃

A head of state being that bothered by a game that only ten people in America have even heard of is beyond staggering. Eight of those people play for the same team. @superflippy@mastodon.xyz thanks for sharing a link around the pay wall. Any governing body being anti-science has always been a massive red flag for me. Glad to see such a simple test still works. At the same time I have to wonder what the real motivation is. For the USA the reported budget is a rounding error. Why is the American government trying to ensure that the data cannot be collected by going so far as to remove the instrumentation completely? Are thousands of bald eagles flying into them every year?

There's an accountant somewhere not doing their job properly. I would be curious to see how different frequency vibrations work with different foods. Does increasing frequency make it better on everything? Is there an optimum frequency for onions which is different from peppers? My Dremel has an app where you can choose what material, bit and application you have and it can Bluetooth the speed to the tool. I have never downloaded the app.

@mattblaze I've got to the stage, professionally, where I actually enjoy being told how to do things by the people who are new to the field. Either they will stick it out and cringe ten years down the line when they realise or they'll leave and the industry will remember them as that person that thought they knew everything. I got a wonderful email only a week or two ago from someone only a few years into the shallow. It started by asking me why their system worked as it did. For the main course the sender very clearly, and incorrectly, laid out some basic engineering. The dessert was the confidently asserted "everyone does this" with regards to something unique to them across the industry subsector. At this point I was feeling quite the silly sausage and thoroughly grateful for their insight.

It won't take as long as asbestos for it to be revealed as an awful idea though. I'm sure it'll be harder for big ai to hide it than for big asbestos who spent years suppressing science, lobbying governments and denying victims' claims. Pliny the younger wrote of the illness of asbestos mine workers and he's so old he's in history books. He even wrote about history before it had been invented. Probably because it was the present when he wrote. However we still put asbestos in everything we could in the twentieth century.

@berniethewordsmith@neopaquita.es mostly good with the rare annoyance. I've been using Linux for fifteen years or so. On laptops I'll try a new-to-me distro every few months. Desktop-wise on my gaming machine Bazzite on the whole just works. I think the only issue I see on a semi regular basis is being unable to interact with an in focus application until it's selected through the running applications picker or whatever it's actually called. Out of the box some Steam launches would take forever to load initially due to something like rendering shaders only it wasn't quite that. I had to add a few lines to a config file to resolve.

@KevinMarks whilst I'm glad a proper study has been done, I'm not really sure if it matters. When such a high percentage of the public believe something, the truth becomes largely irrelevant. Saying AI isn't great seems like preaching to the converted now. I view AI like I view cults. I'm pretty sure that deep down, at home, with the curtains drawn and the lights off when cult followers would admit that some things they tow the line on are not correct. They also don't care as they'd rather be in than out. For whatever reason (I guess media and hope) a lot of people I know who support and use AI seem to gloss over all the negatives with "yes, well...", "is still new...", "it's improving..." and seem very happy with mediocre results it yields them. If it was any other thing I'm pretty sure they wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. It's easier to type an AI prompt than read a book that's mostly wrong. Maybe it's an effort thing.

@anthropy I'm fully behind joules for everything non-human. I tolerate other people using kWh because industry. Personal calculations are always joules or a multiple of. Taking the NHS daily 2500 kcal and 2000 kcal for men and women respectively as 2.9 kWh and 2.3 kWh makes me feel useless. Even a small machine can use that per hour and keep it running constantly. Takes me all day to that and most of it is merely existing as a lifeform (existence-form?). Only a small amount of that is actually useful work. Someone please calculate human CoP of manual tasks. I don't think I'd manage an A+++ rating when they put the sticker on me. I want a human-diet-only unit so that I can turn a blind eye to my comparative rubbishness by it not being so obvious. I'm now 110 % behind different units so that I may back up 10 % and still be completely behind them.

Looking at when meta seemingly introduced this and profits they got some benefit, but with growth it's not huge. Assuming max fine which I doubt will happen. As horrible as censorship or refusing a company doing business feels, sometimes it's the only answer if you can profit your way out of fines.
