@wwahammy@social.treehouse.systems I’m working with a client right now that is *heavily* in the LLM kool aide. So much so that it’s impossible for me to avoid interacting with LLMs while performing my work. I absolutely feel like a disgustingly gross person after I’m done with work.

@courtney I have... I think... like 100 instant ramens waiting for me in the garage pantry, of all sorts of varying flavors. I just feel pulled towards buying every new flavor I ever see. I'm not ashamed of it, at least I can keep myself fed for a couple of months if everything goes sideways. Just need water and a fire.

I sympathize with all the Android users who are upset about Google locking Android down further, but FTR I find the “Keep Android Open” phrase inaccurate at best. Android is already not open, there’s ~20 years of Google ruining Android already. While yes, keeping Google from exerting more control is desirable, it will never supplant the need for real open operation systems and software for our mobile devices. The vendor duopoly is the problem, no matter who those vendors are.

From my vantage point (Not a generalized statement), most Python I see out there isn’t written by humans, let alone adult humans. I am *literally* in the position that I have teams import my private helper code across the codebase and then angry when I “break” my helper, in large part because they’re just shipping what Claude gives them.

Before somebody says it: Yes, a sufficiently experienced engineer, with sufficient domain expertise, can probably suss out some/most of these pain points even *without* touching the code by hand. You might just have that gut feeling that “cost” and “price” aren’t the same concept in a finance application. But that’s a lot of hope to put in your gut, and likely robs juniors from ever building that sixth sense to begin with.

IMO one of the core functional issues (There are plenty of non-functional ones too, of course) with people who use LLMs for writing code is: It strips away friction. You can’t first “make the change easy”, if you never realize the change was hard to begin with, because you never felt the friction of trying to make the change yourself. LLMs rob us of one of *the* core signals to whether our code is working with us, or against us.

Over the past couple of nights I've been setting up my Mastodon server on a new Ubuntu 26.04 VM (The original server was set up using Digital Ocean's "One click install" on 20.04 back in 2022). I feel like a teenager again, in a good way. I haven't had this much fun messing with computers in a long time.

@courtney@pdx.social I think you are *correct* in the conclusion that hosting stuff on GitHub *is* putting it in a training set. But it also feels a bit… tone deaf? To suggest people can’t be upset by that. When I put my project in GitHub a decade ago, that was very much *not* the expectation that was being set. I’m sure you know that. The deal changed since then yes, and *not* moving is a choice, so you could say I’m at fault. But the powers that be also understand that friction, and are abusing it.

Is it perfect? No. But like... that's the answer? That is literally how we enforce anything in the real world?
