Quick Q: How well does your typical software engineer understand git and GitHub? Like, working copies, SHAs, Merckel Trees, git rebase -i, got reset, etc. My perception is that there's a necessary 5% you need to create PRs, and beyond that, people run commands without understanding what's going on behind the scenes. Am I wrong?

@hrw@society.oftrolls.com As a gotcha: it doesn't work with 6.19.x or 17.0.x - a patch related to GIC V3 from November 2025 is causing deadlocks with nested VMs that eventually cause a reboot. 6.13-6.18 kernel with qemu-kvm 10.1.x is required.

@hrw@society.oftrolls.com The system has FEAT_NV2 (yay AmpereOne), the host kernel is booted with kvm-arm.mode=nested, the L1 hypervisor VM is starting qemu with the right machine parameters I believe (virtualization=on,virt) and I see in the L1 hypervisor kernel messages that all CPU cores are started at EL2.

@purpleidea@mastodon.social It's specifically Arm64 - I've already worked through a ton of issues - upgraded to F43, qemu 10.1, and passed in -machine virt, virtualization=on to qemu - I've verified that the guest hypervisor supports virtualization. Still looking into what the issue is. Some kind of host-level interrupt processing?

Anyone have experience running nested VMs on Arm64? When I start an L2 guest inside an L1 hypervisor with virsh, one or two host cores (not cores being used by the L1 hypervisor) get pegged at 100% and I get warnings from the kernel about a core getting stuck - not sure how to debug it and characterize the issue.

You might be right - but if public transport does not fill the need (eg. if the quantity/quality/reliability of public transport is poor), all you will do is deprive people who would otherwise do that job of a livelihood and create a shortage of taxis.

We tax tobacco and alcohol sales because as a society we see those as bad and want to discourage them. We subsidize behaviour that we want to encourage (spending on energy efficient homes or EVs over ICE vehicles).

Managing inflation - taxing people takes money out of the economy, Government spending puts money into the economy. Tax policy's first job is to prevent the economy from overheating.
Wealth redistribution - in the absence of intervention, wealth floats to the top. Progressive fiscal policy takes more from the wealthy and subsidizes the poor, for the good of society (1/2)

Business owners sometimes spend money from their profits on nice things that they don't strictly need, in order to reduce taxable profits, as long as they can claim the nice things as legitimate business expenses.

The chart does include all the borders I mentioned plus a France-Surinam border, a Netherlands-France border in the Caribbean, a UK/Cyprus border I didn't know about, Croatia borders with Montenegro and Bosnia, and a Russian border with Poland (among others).
