Replying to @ljrk@todon.eu
@ljrk@todon.eu @buherator@infosec.place @drwhax@infosec.exchange Part of the source of this is the lawyers. In business, companies are typically shielded from liability if they follow "standard and customary business practices". So if "everyone else" is doing it that way, you can too without taking on the liability. Of course, that takes you only so far. If your business is unable to function for two months, legal liability may well be the least of your concerns. But the problem with that threat is that it's a gray rhino risk. Those are really really hard to get businesses to spend on mitigating. For better or worse, LLM-based attacks may remove most of the gray from those risks and reduce the resistance to mitigation.

@adamshostack@infosec.exchange I did my own smart detector. Dumb wired interconnected detectors, plus a relay that senses the signal on the interconnection, plus a Zigbee inline switch that sends a signal to Home Assistant. Everything local. Not as feature rich, perhaps, but no privacy issues. And no enshittification concerns that the manufacturer will hold the devices for ransom when they feel the need for more revenue.

@jm_favreau@c.im @pommesdelune@mastodon.social Yes, I've done these things. It's been working great. You'll need to use the data it collects for a while to help you with tuning, because you'll be learning about how your home absorbs and releases heat in various forms (ambient vs direct sun, for example). But even at a first attempt it will make an immediate difference.

@adamshostack@infosec.exchange in some ways, I love this so much. Tell the 12 year old that they need to get as high a score as possible on the exam, and they hatch a plan to steal the answer key. And think about how stupid grown-ups are. It's hard NOT to anthropomorphize GenAI sometimes.

@ryan2one3@mstdn.ca the original trophy was, in fact, a cup. A rather striking Art Deco design. Brazil got to keep it for being the first team to win three times. They then commissioned the current trophy as the replacement for the cup, but the tournament name stuck.
