I think the difference now is that the amount of effort to create something has never been lower with vibecoding. Vibecoding is a bad idea for a ton of reasons but it's definitely never been easier if you want to. That's what makes revealing private information about users to site and app owners more dangerous than ever.

@CrowOnAKettle I think the difference between those two systems is only a matter of degree. Even in the EU case, you're providing a targeting signal that previously didn't exist before. The only difference from CA's implementation is that it's a fuzzier signal.

I'm thinking about the freedom fighters in Central America I met last year who told me all about the ways they were using free software to fight colonialism and oppression. It was truly some of the most amazing and inspiring work I've ever seen.
Made a (shortsighted) joke to one of them that's she's lucky she's not having to deal with the AI bubble there. She said very seriously "It's just one more way you're oppressing us".

This is a good read. I haven't used a coding assistant yet. I've reviewed vibe coded code and I've reviewed code written by a senior engineer following a similar process to @mttaggart. The code for the vibe-coded software was abysmal. It mostly didn't work.
But an engineer following a solid process even with safeguards still came up with pretty bad code. It was wordy to the extreme and it didn't have near enough abstraction. The code it created functioned but it was unmaintainable. PR reviews took legit three times as long.
It's fantastic at generating a lot of code but generating code is not the only cost in software.

The entitlement of these scumbags is unmatched. They know this is a controversial topic and they know lots of codebases won't allow AI generated code but it just costs too much to maintain a fork themselves.
It's like if a project said they don't allow defense contractors to contribute and then Boeing employees started submitting under false identities.

I'm paired with a junior developer. She had a short career in the film industry so today I told her about the cinematic masterpiece that is "Antitrust".

Setting aside the evil result, doesn't this imply that states are, more or less, entirely banned from regulating how therapists do their job? Step back from the specifics of conversion therapy for a second and think more generally: if a therapist's speech is protected from government regulation, then how can they ever punish abusive therapists who believe that they're doing the right thing?
If a therapist believes that calling a patient abusive names, manipulating them, gaslighting them and humiliating them is what is best, doesn't that mean the state is powerless to stop them?

* That the AG of California will sue a random Linux distro which has effectively no money

* Prove by preponderance of the evidence how many children used the OS in order to set the fines
* get a judge and jury to think this isn't a massive waste of their time
* That it isn't just a violation of the law but is a "negligent" or "intentional" violation
* all the while, the OS maker and everyone else having effectively zero knowledge of who uses it since there's no continuing relationship with users.

A small set of people are merging changes to various Linux components to make sure every application knows your birth date.
This is being done rapidly by people with questionable justifications and being merged with no youth and few marginalized people involved.

I've seen what vibe coding results in. But I've seen what heavily AI generated but directed by a talented engineer results in.
It results in bad code. It MIGHT run but even if it does it will be horrible to read and horrible to maintain. Once you generate anything larger than the contents of a small function, you're creating mountains of technical debt.
Caveat: it might be possible to generate multiple unit tests at once and not create a mess. That said, you need to be incredibly careful to not overlook appropriate abstractions. If you do, you're creating a maintenance headache.
