@mbt3d@graphics.social @davidrevoy@framapiaf.org I don't want to get all "in my day" and crumudgeony, but the longer I use (and work in) tech the more appreciation I have for stuff that doesn't break easily. Most of the devices and systems I've used over the years are just gone now, broken. It's so nice to grab a tool that I got so many years ago, want to use it in a specific way and just see it do the thing I want it to do.

@mbt3d@graphics.social @davidrevoy@framapiaf.org it used to be much more hassle to get it working on Linux, but for many years now it's been just plug-and-play and the thing just refuses to die. For modern tech world standards it's almost a miracle device to me :)
So I have this Wacom Intuos4 tablet that I've been using with various systems for.. 15 years? 16? It works perfectly fine for my needs, but I've never bothered to set up the OLED displays for buttons this entire time. Until now! I have a fresh #fedora reinstall and wanted to set things up nice. Turns out you can always count on @davidrevoy@framapiaf.org for topics on the intersection of art, software and Linux. There's a blog post from 2011 describing exactly what I need and hey, it worked without tinkering! And now I can spend the rest of my Sunday tinkering with the exact setup I want. Thanks David for all the work that you do (and document!), it's not the first and probably not the last time you helped me :)

There's this old Asterix comic book (can't find it) where Romans try to clear the sacred forest around the Gaul village, but Asterix can re-grow the trees faster than they are getting cut down, using magic acorns. And so there's this exchange where the guy tasked with cutting the trees down points to a huge stack of timber saying "Look at all the trees we cut down!" and the exasperated Roman commander replies "We pay you for clearing the forest, not for bringing in more timber". I think about that scene a lot now in the context of corporate LLM use.

@yurisizov@mastodon.gamedev.place I get that the end goal is selling this as a filter that you can feed any input and make it "realistic" (can't wait for the visual nightmares it produces) and in the end: if players want to do that, who's gonna stop them. But I truly believe that games with unique and intentional art (even if it's simple/stylized) will stand out and be appreciated more for what they are once everything else is turned into slop. Or at least, I hope so...
