@futzle@old.mermaid.town The 0:15 and 0:45 offsets really confused North Americans and Europeans I was working with on an IEEE (and later IEC/IEEE) timesync standard. I had to point out that Nepal and Chatham Islands (NZ) have 45min as legal offsets. So much for getting away with encoding offsets as multiples of 30min!

How the heck does the US FCC authorise a commercial satellite operator to use Amateur Service frequencies for "emergency" TT&C, but only when not over the US. @Infoseepage @Andii @pluralistic Yeah, 1 and 2 axis tracking not worth it for the power gain you get. Much better off "wasting" more money on panels if you have the space. Anything mechanical will give you grief in the future.

@Infoseepage @Andii @pluralistic MPPT is an electrical thing, it makes sure power it taken from the panels at the best voltage. I'm pretty sure all inverters have some form of MPPT, but better ones will have 2 or 3 that allow for different insolation, and hence optimum voltage, between strings. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maximum_power_point_tracking?wprov=sfla1

Over-provisioning panels and optimising for late afternoon is starting to be done more widely in Australia. A 5kW inverter can generally have around 6kW of panels connected as standard.

@munin Design for Manufacture, Design for Installation and Design for Maintenance are fundamental. And so often missed. Design engineers need to at least see, and ideally be involved in, making and using the product. I was fortunate to be taken under the wing of an experienced technician when I was a graduate engineer and it opened up my eyes.

@daisy Does the Boox support band 28/n28? None of the e-ink phones I've looked at did the AU special bands, and the specs I saw on the Boox page don't mention bands. Now that Western Europe is moving to use band 28 hopefully it will be in more devices.

@BruceMirken @CStamp I first drove (but did not own) an EV in 1996, and they've definitely improved. The limitation for Australia is charging. Even the Tesla charger sites are in poor locations, and forecourt charger locations are rare as hens' teeth. People I know with EVs all do home charging as standard and use fast charging when travelling.

@CStamp @BruceMirken Definitely not a lease. Maybe used, but I need to do a lot more research. At around 4500km/y (combined use of two people) the cost of fuel in a 10y old 1.6l hatch is not a big impetus for change.

@BruceMirken EV premium for new cars is way more than low thousands for comparable makes here. If you go with EVs from China (no shortage) you can save money but there are ongoing issues around service and support. Importers "new to the market" getting into strife with pesky consumer protection laws.

@BruceMirken $1100 year pales into price difference. In Australia the Ioniq 6 goes for $70k to $95k. The Camry is $43k to $60k. So bottom spec difference is A$27k or US$18.6k. Fuel savings will take 17y to recoup (no present value or financing considered), assuming battery lasts that long.
Energy security is a big plus, and if you have cheap/free PV then payoff is faster. Service costs are much lower on EV too. But capital cost of EV is a big show stopper.

@BruceMirken @CStamp One area the companies can take blame for is not fitting higher end safety features in small cars. 25y ago I'd you wanted ABS and dual airbags the minimum size was a VW Golf (big when used to driving a Mazda 121), and bigger still for traction control and side airbags. Minimum safety spec laws have helped, but now the small cars are no longer imported into Australasia.

@quadrivial I though this was a story about Brisbane oil refineries. Bulwer Island was a BP refinery on the north side of the river mouth, and Lytton is an Ampol refinery on the south side. It looks like the names did come from Edward Bulwer-Lytton.

@tkalvas @becomethewaifu @tilton The civilised world uses mm² for wire cross section, from appliance flex through to high voltage power lines. The US uses AWG for little stuff and "kcmil" for the big stuff. A "kcmil" is the area equivalent to one thousand wires a thousandth of an inch in diameter (kilo circular mils). Also called MCM because some people prefer roman numbers.

@cstross @Cadbury_Moose @tienelle There's metric madness too. A tablespoon in most parts of the world is 15ml (3 teaspoons). But not in Australia, where a tablespoon is 20ml (4 tsp). That messes up trans-Tasman recipes.

@benbradley@hachyderm.io @Endof10@floss.social The 2011 laptop is surprisingly good (Toshiba, 4G RAM, 500GB SSD). Even Windows 10 works well. Win 10 is now a dog on my 2007 baby laptop (1.2GHz, 2G RAM, 60G SSD) but Fedora 30 runs adequately. There's a 2004 XP machine I should run up for a laugh too (last used in 2012) and take a family photo 😀. Batteries are stuffed in all laptops, except for the one that was replaced over the weekend.
