The tabby cat pictured is about a week out from spay surgery. Ever since she got her junk yanked, this feline, whose former main mode of interaction — when she deigned to acknowledge my existence at all — was to claw the crap out of me, is now my happy lil constant purring lap-buddy. Excellent Niece suspected that our big warmblood horses would appreciate a lawn sprinkler, since it’s like 100F here in Texas (38 C) and these horses’ DNA originated in Northern Europe where it’s historically not a heat-hellmouth. Her instincts were correct. Teddy the Friesian from the Netherlands was all in, followed in short order by his grey German Holsteiner compatriot. Horses crack me up.

Not content to keep posting blurry iPhone nature photos, tonight I hauled out the 15 yo digital Leica for the first time in a long while. This camera is entirely manual, and clearly I have forgotten how to use it after many years basking in point-and-shoot iPhone pix. Am now embarking on my Blurry Leica Period. Sustained multiple mosquito bites and pollen-y sneezes for not much payoff. Am basically gummy with Benadryl bug spray residue. But the game is afoot! I’m gonna re-master this camera on accounta I love the familiar-yet otherworldly look of Leica photos, even when I screw’em up. Black-chinned hummingbird perched on a teeny glass mason jar feeder in my backyard at sunset in the Texas Hill Country.

To wit: My late Horse Whisperer once asked me for a bunch of money to ransom his sexagenarian mother from cartel slavery. The cartel fucks had just squatted on her puny family farm and forced her to work. The money got her safely to the US, but shortly thereafter the whole Trump thing happened, then Horse Whisperer died, and I never found out what happened to her after that. Oh, and did I mention that when HW was just a wee lad of 6, the fucking cartel murdered his father in front of him? This is the kind of fucked-up shit these folks are trying to escape.

Turns out I’m astonishingly bad at distinguishing bird calls. Don’t know where I’d be without Merlin. It’s helped me solve numerous avian mysteries. Today I finally ID’d both a Nashville warbler AND a blue-gray gnatcatcher! So many backyard birds, so little time. #birds #birding

Today I was laid up, so I watched about 437 movies that Netflix recommended. Jurrasic World Rebirth, Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning, Red Notice, The Rip, The Woman in Cabin 10, Polar, A House of Dynamite, and Wind River. They all sucked to varying degrees except for the last two, which I appreciated for their dearth of motorcycle chases through fabled European cities and abstention from dudely beatdowns and shit-tons of CGI. Netflix thinks I am a 22 year old fratboy, apparently.

I know Wind River was good because, unlike the other ones, there were no gratuitous shoot-out scenes during which I felt compelled to play Candy Crush. #movies

On my way to bail the goats out of their fertilizing duties in the vineyard and into the barn ahead of this big-ass stormfront that has been lighting up my phone for the past 2 hours. I knew this was gonna be the real deal because the goats uncharacteristically stuck to me like glue all the way back to the barn. Minutes after I took Photo 1 the sky turned absolutely black and started pelting hail. Photo 2: it ended up being redonkulous.
