We have the largest quartz monzonite dome monadnock in the world, and we're the only ones who seem to call that weird little plant Diamorpha--everybody else seems to call it Elf Orpine.

@idzie@kolektiva.social I live in a verdant, fecund place with rolling red clay hills covered in white oaks, tulip poplars, and pignut hickories (and century-old human planted pecans). The understory is filled with mountain laurel, buckeye, azaleas, and dogwoods. Among them hop the brown thrashers and Eastern towhees, and ruby throated hummingbirds visit the flowers. We are in the shadow of a monzonite dome monadnock covered with loblolly pines struggling to hang on. Diamorpha blooms red in shallow depressions.

The symptoms are not exactly the same as Long COVID or ME/CFS, although I too have a limited energy budget I have to constantly watch, but the feelings about it are really similar. And no, the grief does not go away.

@aj So I'm an USAian who has never been to the Southern Hemisphere. Sidney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Darwin, Adelaide. Brisbane and Darwin are warm. Brisbane is near the Great Barrier Reef. Sidney: Big city. Opera house, Olympics, and stuff. Melbourne: i have some colleagues who live there. Really dry most of the year. Cool rivers nearby (I'm a stream ecologist) Adelaide is on the flying doctors show.

They report as truth what somebody said on Facebook or what ChatGPT told them. It takes two minutes to read Lia Thomas's Wikipedia article, a few more minutes if you want to click through to the sources and learn even more. It's not hard to be well informed. But it's so damn easy to just repeat easy lies that support your bigotry.

At least on Mastodon, it's easy to add a personal note on their profile the first time they're obnoxious, and then block them the second time. And if they really cross the line, report them to their server and they actually face consequences.

For looking things up, all modern biology textbooks are basically interchangeable, and I know because I've been on textbook selection committees many times and looked at so many of them. They're written by committees, each with their own biases, and they all read that way. I wouldn't bother putting any of them on a "best of" list. I mostly use OpenStax in my classes so my students don't have to pay.

But in the year 1900, DeVries, Correns and Tschermak all rediscovered his work while working on similar questions, and they all credited him in their foundational works. I read it in college, and it's beautiful and elegant in a way that few modern books are.
