@codinghorror@infosec.exchange Why artists? Will it be actors next? Then singers? I think unpaid carers would have benefitted a hell of a lot more. Then charity volunteers, people trying to escape domestic violence, recovering addicts, etc We can do the arts after we get basic human necessities funded first.

@TechConnectify@mas.to Did I miss it or did you get through 1:11 without mentioning the word punkhawallah? The punkha (or pankha) was the predecessor to the ceiling fan and was often operated by a punkha wallah, who was paid to keep the punkha moving. It dates back to 8th century Arabia. Because ceiling fans replaced the punkha and the wallah they were sometimes called punkhawallahs. The word lives on in the 'Punkah Louvre', the kind of device you'll find above your head directing air towards you.

@aredridel@kolektiva.social Using the scale above I'd be classifying repeatedly hitting your thumb with a hammer, a sickening kind of pain, as 4, it wouldn't stop me doing anything but would be a distraction. About the same as treading on a weaver fish, or being bitten by a bullet ant. Crippling back ache after an injury, where it takes 20 minutes of careful manoeuvring to get to the toilet would be 8. Are these representative of what you'd expect?

@aredridel@kolektiva.social In the case of the person i mentioned with a high pain threshold I'm sure it later lead to their premature death in hospital after a accident. The doctors didn't treat their injuries and deterioration seriously because they weren't in pain. They probably would have classified walking on a broken ankle at 3. I worked with then for many years and saw them shake off hits, that would have crumpled me into a ball, without a second thought.

Where are "the thought of movement terrifies me, I will deficate where I lay" and "I'm only vaguely aware of your presence. Pain is everything If death is the only way to make it stop please kill me." On the other hand I know someone who, after coming round after major lung surgery, was repeatedly offered pain medication because they "must be in a lot of pain" and didn't need any because it was "just a little uncomfortable".

I should get round to adding a switch for that. I also need to dig out out a 40 track drive so I can write proper 40 track discs.

@mia@tearoom.tearmoon.com The Acorn Archimedes I restored recently had several 3½" discs with it that gave me trouble but that was mould rather than damage or delamination. They were mainly copies so I just squirted some isopropyl onto the magnetic surface and spun the discs. Don't try that with anything rare/valuable though. About 15 years ago I bought multiple of the best 'new' floppy drives I could find in all formats, so at least I don't have to worry about them.

Why, when fine threads are available on so many more sizes? It makes no sense. Someone should revoke their permission to use the metric system if they can't use it responsibly.

@SamantazFox No. I have usb-c devices that aren't PD as well. Those devices will become slow charging junk if I can't buy a new charger. The point is that the "one cable" claim is a lie. They have different power ratings and data rate, and need different power supplies. It's the same mix of incompatible standards just all stuffed in one connector. Same e-waste, different hat.

Phones than only charge at the fastest speed with the manufacturers charger even if other chargers claim to support the same protocol. The best thing to do is upgrade all your chargers and cables every year, only keeping specific old combinations for certain devices. Same e-waste different hat.

Others currently support higher wattage topping out at 240W, at 5 amps of current and 48v. High powered chargers won't fast charge with the wrong cable. Or if the power negotiation protocol is different. Some have discreet voltages but others are continuous range. The whole USB-C thing is a complete mess.
