Realising my son's school shoes are actually wearing out for the second time ever. So we measured his feet to buy some online.
The uk shoe size system turns out to be the most bonkers measuring system (with a connection to the real world) that I've ever seen.
For starters I've never encountered the barley corn as a unit of measure before.

Something like:
foo.map(|f| f.clone()).unwrap_or_else(||A::new())
Anyone going to @emf@social.emfcamp.org fancy bringing a telescope along and joining me in letting people see some interesting space stuff if the weather is good?
Its always lovely to let people see the moon close up, the looks of awe on their faces. But I don't think I can handle dealing with that many people on my own.
I'm happy to put in a proposal but I would like to know it wouldn't just be me and a single telescope with hundreds of folk trying to look through it.
My wife was sat in a meeting the other day when the chair collapsed under her. We are now having a good giggle as she fills in the health and safety incident form.
Who ever designed this form was not expecting meeting room chairs to be involved in accidents.
"Have you been trained in the use of this equipment?"
"Did you wear appropriate PPE while using the equipment?"
"Did you perform pre-use checks on the equipment?"
Been going through the tool boxes we collected from my wife's dads place. I've been able to figure out most of the tools (with a little help from my dad for the bike specific bits)
But the purpose of these three baffles us. Made of what feels like streel, they look like they were machined.
Any one got a clue what they are for?
@neil@mastodon.neilzone.co.uk Gurr.
Were I prime minister there would be rules about this kind of thing.
A charge applied at the time of bricking, based on the number of devices in existence, a disposal fee if you will. Avoidable by open sourcing the firmware and providing unlocking instructions usable by non technical folk, verified by gov funded engineers (paid to be picky as heck) and hosted on a gov.uk domain.
(And it applies to any device bricked from now forward)
Never seen a hermit crab in the wild before, then found two in the same rock-pool.
Wonder how many other browsers will post demo screen shots with a trans flag today (this fine trans day of visibility)
Just had the biggest kick to my confidence that we can ever actually make a difference to this world.
A few years back I worked on a project to try and get a source of truth that various groups could agree on, it meant building a map that worked basically anywhere. Phones, laptops, big projector screens.
We built a 3d map that ran off a 30cm terrain model and imagery. It looked fucking awesome. Seriously the terrain model was detailed enough cars showed up in 3d.
