The flea market TDS7104 booted up the first time I tried, with dim LCD screen, but failed with CMOS battery error the next time. You need to remove 29 screws to access the PC motherboard, but there’s a new battery now. After some Windows 2000 wrangling, the PC system is back to normal. The dim LCD was not because of faded CCFL backlight but because… the Windows gamma and brightness settings were wrong. I need to backup the HD and install an SSD, but the scope is functional again!

@azonenberg@ioc.exchange I don't have any experience with the Vivado ILA (the ISE one was IMO close to unusable), but the Quartus ILA is amazing, with the option to create write strobes that are an AND/OR combination of selected signals, so that you can record slow signals on a fast clock domain.

@0h00000000@ioc.exchange @craigjb@fosstodon.org From the TI datasheet: "Because the SN65DSI86 is a DSI to eDP bridge, the SN65DSI86 only supports eDP panels which support ASSR (Alternate Scrambler Seed Reset)." So don't expect this chip to work with a regular DP monitor...

Note that the TI chip uses eDP, which is not always compatible with regular DP: the PRBS scrambler is initialized with a different value to act like a cheap alternative for DRM.

@cfbolz @CanLehmann @verijit The speedily is remarkable. I’ve just a general interest in how logic simulators work and I’m wondering how you do it. Do you need to do any special preparation of the Verilog to do it? The Verilog of a CPU is not or doesn’t have to be all that different from other logic.

@karotte@chaos.social That’s a fun thing to try. I looked through the datasheet of the VGA controller but couldn’t really figure out how they did it. The chip has an input to stream in video, but that data isn’t gen-locked AFAICT. I think it’s a DMA into the controller attached video memory.

When first introduced, HP called their scopes “infinium”. Then some dumb marketing guy at Agilent decided that 3 i’s was not enough and renamed them to “infiniium”…

The second scope supports Windows XP instead of Windows 98. Someone hosts a Symantec Ghost image. Takes almost 45 minutes to install, but after that, the scope boots Windows XP.

Instead of a parallel IDE cable and CompactFlash adapter card, there's this elegant solution of an adapter that plugs straight into the motherboard, no cable required. Works really well! So now there's only 1 flat cable for the CDROM, and the BIOS detects both.

Onto the second 54813B scope. This one immediately boots up to a BIOS screen. It has 512MB instead of 256MB of memory. But it doesn’t detect a HD.

This makes sense… because when I open it up, it doesn’t have one. It also doesn’t have any of the IDE cables or the special adapter board to connect to the LS120 floppy drive.

I think I’ll simply give up on the LS120 floppy drive, but 2 IDE cables and a compact flash adapter.

That concludes the work for today.

Every time a computer magazine dropped in your mailbox, clock speeds had gone up again. (I learned C on an x86 with 640k RAM and a 30MB HD.)

After reassembling the unit and connecting all cabling between top and bottom PCBs, the DG535 gets stuck in an endless boot up loop. 🙁 This is while it’s connected to the variac. The overvoltage might have damaged some analog stuff, so figuring this out will be fun… (The fan is way too loud too, but at least that’s easy to fix.)
