That realization that most developers in industry today don't think about software the same way I do at all. (As a liability.)

There are a hell of a lot of tools that exist only because someone didn't learn Make. Being a developer in 2001 and not knowing Make would be like becoming a C++ programmer without knowing C++. Oh. I get it now.

The phone ceases to be a convenience when every time I go to the grocery store I have to open the app and log in to use my perks card. This goes for web apps too. The PA gov SSO site has a 6 month password change policy. I visit that site once a year. I have to change my password EVERY TIME I used that website.

And yes I understand that a developer can turn bad, or a dependency can go bad. a) That's my problem, as the owner of the phone and the one who decided to update the app, and b) What's the VERY FIRST thing I'm gonna do with the new version, if I get signed out?

Due to our lovely weather, I have to hose out my trash cans every week after collection because of nasty things growing in them. I've just done this week's iteration and I feel like I'm gonna need another shower before I can sit down, even though I can't really say I touched anything but the hose. Eww.

@AncTreat5358@lgbtqia.space Yeah I always heard people saying good about the CoCo but never really got to use one. I was intrigued by the 6809. I had used (and enjoyed) a TRS-80 Model III, and later I worked at a Radio Shack Computer center for a couple of months (during which I sold a Tandy 4000 Xenix system for a nice commission), but I was mostly a Commodore kid. But the Amiga was, up until about 1998, the machine I was really after.

So, last night I fired up AmiBerry and created a couple hard drive files ("System" and "Work") and installed AmigaOS3.2 and then Picasso96 (booted just fine for a while) and then later I edited my user startup script and now it simply doesn't boot anymore. Black screen, not even a kickstart splash. Booted from another disk, edited the change back, no help. Half of the preset configurations on the amiberry quickstart list don't actually succeed in booting, even when paired with appropriate Kickstart ROM and Workbench. Is this simply the state of #Amiga emulation these days?

@ifixcoinops@retro.social My kids went to a curriculum-free school. They already knew how to read when we took them there, but in the info session before enrollment, they had a FAQ and the first question was "How will my kid learn how to read?" And the answer was that if you give them books about stuff they're interested in, they just do. And when I was there for the observation session, a little kid came up and interrupted the adult I was talking to and asked how to spell someone's name so they could go kill them on the school's (student-run) Minecraft server.

My bank emailed me "AI is changing check fraud. Here's what you can do to protect yourself." Nonono, Mr. Banky-bank. Tell me what YOU are doing to protect me against check fraud. This is a you problem, caused by a system you designed and run. How about you don't externalize that cost onto me? I have, since the 1980s, DESPISED any excuse like "oh sorry we got a new computer system" or "we can't do X anymore because of the computer". How you do business isn't my fucking problem. Don't give me excuses for not having your shit together. This is the same as "we are experiencing unexpectedly high call volume." Well, that's pretty fucking poor planning on your part, then, innit? Hold times aren't long because of the forces of nature, they are because you're too fucking cheap to pay sufficient staff.

AIUI, current theories are that the development of human consciousness is an emergent result of humans living in groups and learning to communicate with each other. You know how to buy enough bricks for your herringbone sidewalk because somebody figured out a long time ago, building upon earlier discoveries like how to count and language, and then used consciousness, language and intelligence to teach that insight to others. Why would we defeat the very mechanism that brought about civilization (not brought about our civilization, brought about the idea of civilization) by creating fences around ideas so that people could keep them secret? Intellectual property isn't just a bad idea, it's completely absurd.

The next OS had the feature, but we still had to support older OSes. So on the day we ended support for that old OS, I gleefully deleted 7000 lines of code that took me months to write. Best day ever. The only code with no bugs is code that doesn't exist.
