From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free!

Biologist & educator in the Netherlands. I've got a column somewhere but I'll never tell. I like (palaeo)botany, anthropology, free & open software, Chinese tea, old hifi tech and writing alt text. He/him.

today in our bright #AI future: I spotted an #LLM-generated poster advertising jobs at a local snack bar, with a completely garbled #slop QR code to boot. I wonder if the pay is in ChatGPT tokens?

@rperezrosario@mastodon.social @eff@mastodon.social I've been using Capy Reader for a while now. It's FOSS, works well, has a nice customisable UI and the dev's very responsive.

with the recent round of layoffs at #bandcamp, the time has come to download all the music I ever bought from there (bought a lot of physical releases that I never ended up downloading) and go to one of the better alternatives. using https://github.com/easlice/bandcamp-downloader seems to be doing a great job so far. using bandcamp-downloader.py --cookies /path/to/cookies/cookies.sqlite -f flac -x --directory albums/ username-here seems to be doing a good job, not the fastest but you just hit return and let the machine do the work, so that's fine.

@splitbrain@fedi.splitbrain.org Q: I'm looking for a FOSS alternative to this app that includes features x and y. I've tried searching and couldn't find anything so would appreciate some personal experiences A: I did a Google search and here's a link to an app that looks like it could be what you're looking for, anyway I haven't tried it, it's not FOSS and I don't know if it has the features you need

I limit my work interactions with #Microsoft 's online environment as much as I can, but each endeavour is an infernal voyage of horrific discovery. I get a few emails a day about spam emails held in quarantine. Now, these are all very obvious spam emails so I'd like to label them all as definitely spam and block the senders, but of course, this can only be done one at a time and the time between clicking an email, getting past the loading spinner and finally getting to click the three dot menu to block the sender and then hitting 'confirm' takes close to 15 seconds. Not doing that for thirty days' worth of emails, so I guess I'm just deleting them and I'll keep getting spam. Microsoft then asks me if my users are protected from phishing attacks - I don't have users, so no idea why I'm getting that notification. I hit 'delete' on all emails and it takes a baffling 90 seconds for the emails to disappear. I go looking for a way to disable the constant emails about the quarantine... no dice, of course. I log out after a fifteen minute struggle, right back where I started.

How people work with this shit every day is beyond me. Just the sloppiest, messiest, most unreliable system, working against you every step of the way. If we have to suffer the indignity of the existence of trillion dollar companies, at least have them make some 'you have to hand it to them'-style usable software - but even that's too much to ask, I guess.

after a few years of good colour grading, #ForAllMankind goes on the list of shows that I have to watch with brightening filters so I can actually see the characters crying at each other. Also on the list of shows that I will stop watching soon because it has finally become enough of a soap opera for me to give up on it

Did an upgrade on Ubuntu MATE, rebooted while anticipating whatever fresh hell awaited after this particular upgrade and it's... the keyboard going completely unrecognised. Always something. Gets picked up by GNOME, not by MATE.

Got there in the end by digging through the fora and finding that installing xserver-xorg-input-all does the trick. Why and how, I am sure I will never understand.

@bruce@darkmoon.social Same here, every day - but they are dying out where they were once ubiquitous. RSS feeds get a little harder to find every day; IMAP is getting turned off as an option by more and more providers (Microsoft being the worst offender here - they'll flip the switch for all their customers one of these days and that'll be the deathstroke). XMPP is also still around, but around the margins, nerds only. I hope for more too and will never cross over to the corporate networks - Fedi and ActivityPub could be huge, they could be the open and flexible way that people connect to each other over the Internet for the foreseeable future - but they could also be an ember, slowly dying out after everyone gets pulled into Threads and then, some years later, has to choose between a supercharged (and by that time proprietary) zuckerverse or a drained, feature poor fedi maintained by a few diehards.

@davehodg@mastodon.green I'm going to very unhelpfully suggest just picking up HTML, then CSS and a tiny bit of basic PHP and just coding your own - a webpage is an easy and fun thing to build, you can even just copy a basic template and tinker with it to suit your needs (a good way to learn HTML). All the interactivity that WordPress offers, that's a lot more work, but who needs all that newfangled Web 2.0 gimmickry anyway?

@jmsdnns@mastodon.social Their security and privacy were terrible until, under massive public pressure, they fixed it. And then everyone kept using it because I guess they were magically no longer a shitty company looking to squeeze money out of their users every which way... and now, here we are. Just use Jitsi, for goodness' sake - why everyone hasn't switched to the perfectly capable, libre, self-hostable alternative is beyond me.
