@paul@oldfriends.live Terrifying. We had raccoons visit our ( very small) rear yard in San Francisco (they do like urban settings where pets are fed outside), and they made it clear they were not to be disturbed. Fascinating animals, but too creative at getting what they want. @W6KME@mastodon.radio

The #Government of Israel is doing its best to incite violence - in this case violating a long standing practice that respected a #Muslim holy site. And this is intentional, as they know from past experience that this triggers violent responses. @benroyce@mastodon.social @infobeautiful@vis.social For simplicity, wouldn't a minimum tax based on wealth, with assets assessed at market value, be a start? There are challenges to this - eg venture capital & startups, art & collectibles, wine collections - which might be difficult to value/audit - but those are, I think, harder to monetize via loans. (I dream of a minimum tax based on expenditures but suspect it would be too easy to game)

@Teri_Kanefield@mastodon.social The only way to end this is to genuinely negotiate with Iran to get to an endpoint that doesn't threaten the people in power. And that means Netanyahu et al. will also need to make serious concessions re Gaza, West Bank, Lebanon, Syria. Unfortunately, I don't see that happening given the current reality in the US, especially the unwillingness of many Ds to recognize the issues re respecting Palestinian rights. And even so, this will not be an easy negotiation.

We knew the basic technology for solar, wind, heat pumps, batteries - and had over 30 years to develop and improve it. (60 years starting with President Carter's solar panels). Think of what we could have done - just look at what semiconductor technology did in the same time period. Unfortunately, the buggy whip lobby dominated.

Apparently "CO2 is Plant Food" advocates ignore the other impacts of CO2 - such as extreme temperature and precipitation variability.

"Lollato estimates this year’s Kansas wheat production may be closer to 200m to 220m bushels, far below the 10-year average of 317m bushels, according to Kansas Wheat, an advocacy group. In 2023’s drought year, Kansas harvested 201m bushels, and 29% of planted acres went unharvested, the most since 1951."

And some people are trying to mitigate the damage: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/may/07/save-government-datasets-deleted?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Other (And, FWIW, they can use a little financial support. Small costs add up: https://opencollective.com/datashelter/projects/datarescueproject)

Ignorance is NOT bliss. It is very dangerous.

The Trump administration is deleting government data. From infant deaths to hunger, here are 5 ways it’s hurting Americans

@Jgbird@mas.to Ah, yes. San Francisco passed an ordinance banning these, with commitments to fund an exchange program for gardening services Of course, the #Mayor's office has never allocated the funds. But hey, we can't actually tax those with money, can we, #MayorLurie? #YesOnPropD #SanFrancisco

@palmoildetectives@mastodonapp.uk Why, oh why, do we search for complex engineering solutions to problems we already have the answer to? We know how to electrify just about everything - just don't have the political will to implement. We know a lot about meaning natural sequestration, especially around restoration of ecosystems. Of course, funding those isn't as glamorous and awe inspiring as large, complex machines requiring massive amounts of energy and maintenance.

@mk30 I've seen some interesting tidbits about the role of forests in precipitation inland of the forests. Quick search found: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/gcb.15763 https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.ads4361 And there have to be articles relevant to local ecosystem changes on migratory species, with impacts over the migratory range. Ditto issues related to pacific salmon as various factors in spawning streams affect success rates, with impacts on the wild salmon population, and hence both food availability for large marine predators, etc. (Not an expert by any means, but snippets gathered from various sources over the years)
