Hotter take, capitalism Hover or focus to reveal Sensitive
As a worker-owner, your income scales with the output of the firm. You are naturally incentivized to be productive and efficient. As an employee, your income is fixed, any surplus accrues to the capitalist owner. You are incentivized to be *just* productive enough not to get fired. So capitalism decouples production from market signals. And must replace them with surveillance and power. That's the opposite of the commonly told story. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

The fact that a lot of surveillance and DRM-like anti-features are justified with "employers need that for security on their company-issued devices" should tell you that the ideological core of capitalism is control, not freedom.

This is extremely worrying to me. Not being able to use any service using reCaptcha is… pretty disruptive, to say the least. *Really* hope the EU stomps this one out – but even if it does, that will take a long time…

Was man stattdessen tun sollte?

Okay, also.

I believe a friend has the book in hardware, going to have to ask here to check for me… And I'll go crazy in the meantime, wondering what happens to the protagonists 😭

@kortschak I mean, I'm biased. I just *really loved* Ada Palmer's writing. Which is enough to humanize Machiavelli and make him a pretty sympathetic figure - not "good", but her thesis is that he was basically a patriot, wanting what's best for Florence. If I wanted to overcome my biases, I would have to read *significantly* more than I'd be willing to - I'm fine just accepting my limitations here ^^

@kortschak Hm it's in my search history, so someone (maybe you?) apparently already mentioned it. Searching Inventing the Renaissance (my "context"), Palmer does cite it critically in the "Why you shouldn't believe anybody (including me) about the Renaissance". 🤷 I'm not a historian and TBQH I don't care enough to actually spend much time on this. But most of all, I just didn't find the book all that "evil". Pragmatic, yes and outdated. But overall, his advice seemed fairly even handed.

@ZachWeinersmith Explain ideals and construct ℂ as ℝ[X]/(X²+1). I actually do think this is (appropriately simplified) a far better explanation than the "add an imaginary i". Especially if you go all the way ℕ→ℤ→ℚ→ℝ→ℂ. because once you get to ℂ, the quotient construction is already familiar. Really, the actually weirdest and hard to understand step is ℚ→ℝ, which is also the most badly explained in school.

By the way: one very specific thing we learned from WW2 is that bombing civilians of a totalitarian regime does *nothing*.
There is no "morale" to destroy, they can not pressure their government to stop the war. It's just needless cruelty, fostering never-ending resentment (ask the people of Dresden).
There's a reason (well… debatable) the US dropped *two* nukes, three days apart: the Japanese regime didn't care about one of their cities getting wiped out.

This isn't specific to AI, it applies to other things as well. "This steak", "this plastic bag", "this drive"… But tech people should know, that small numbers become large at scale, and vice-versa. Saying "this prompt used…" is like saying "we serve millions of requests a month" (so single-digits per second, at best) in reverse - just trying to make the number look small, instead of large.

By 2028, "AI alone could consume as much electricity annually as 22% of all US households."

That would mean the fraction of your energy footprint going to AI would be larger (or at least comparable) to the fraction going to AC or heating.

A lot of times, arguments about energy uses of $thing focus on the micro scale: "this prompt used x Wh, equivalent to running a light bulb y minutes". I find these macro-numbers far more useful. Because they are harder to distort.

That's also my disagreement with @StefanThinks@beige.party FWIW: the literal entire point of taxes is to force people to pay for stuff they don't want to pay for. There's a *lot* of people who don't want to pay for "big bird and healthcare", for example. At the *very* least, we need taxes to price in externalities. That we are paying for the wrong things is, as you say, a political problem. And capitalist anarchism isn't the answer.

But if banks create money by credit, the amount of money created depends on demand for credit. Hence central banks try to control money supply by setting the interest rate. I don't think that's good. Or that MMT is wrong as a theory. But it seems wrong calling something a "misunderstanding" that *in practice* matches the currently implemented policies.

Even just a primary candidate who doesn't win has *an effect* - and that could be almost anybody. The alternative to "if enough voters" is authoritarianism and certainly not what I would prefer.

I'm not saying you need to subscribe to mainstream theory (I certainly don't), but it seems a bit strong to make normative statements in this tone, about a heterodox theory. Seems more useful to be pluralist about it.

Some of our current problems are due to Nazis not getting kicked out vehemently enough after the war. The naivete of your comparisons makes me a bit angry TBQH. Russia is actively fighting an unjust war today - including in the information sphere. Germany hasn't been doing that for 80 years.

You are comparing absolute $-amonuts, when the relative numbers - what percentage of their budget comes from subsidies - seems far more relevant. If I ran a lemonade stand, with lemonade made from 100% state sponsored lemons, it would be more "state funded" than either NPR or Musk's companies, even if the absolute amount would be less than $100.
