All the talk of TSA and DefCon packing reminded me of the funniest situation I had happen back when. Wasn’t even something electronic! But it was when everyone was departing and TSA was giving extra scrutiny to all bags. A very young trainee got assigned to look at my toiletry kit by their trainer. He pulled something out and kept turning it over and around and staring at it in bafflement. For A While. I finally said, it’s a cuticle trimmer. He said “oh!”, looked very enlightened, and put it back in the bag.

  • Toys: I have a selection of his favourite types of toy and a kicker.
  • Brush
  • Pet waste bags
  • Contractor Bag: Always handy for any go bag. You could shove a used litterbox into one if you had to leave a hotel or such in a hurry.
  • Harness/Leash: If your cat is harness trained, have a set in the go bag.
  • Soft bath towel: Impromptu cat bed, use for toweling the cat if need be, etc.

  • Food: Put this on your calendar to rotate regularly. Use the same food they eat usually; if your cat is already upset because you’ve had to leave home, they’re going to be extra unhappy if the food is wrong too.
  • Water
  • Food and water bowls
  • Treats: Don’t forget to rotate these too.
  • Utensil and can lid (my cat gets some canned wet food with his kibble)
  • Dental Care: If this is something your pet needs, include supplies.
  • Medicine: Remember to rotate this.

  • Carrier: Make sure it’s sized correctly for your animal’s weight/size. Sometimes people assume cats always need the “smallest”, but cats that weigh a little more need a size up. The carrier description will have weight and size info.
    • Make sure you label the carrier with your pet’s name, your name and contact info.
  • Bed insert and blanket
  • Pee Pads: Get ones that are meant to be used in carriers. Some say they are not and are intended only to go under litter boxes
  • Litter box, scoop, bag of litter: You obviously don’t want to try and snatch up the used home kitty facilities if you’re trying to rush out the door, so have something clean set aside to grab in an emergency. If you intend to travel with your cat at other times, you might be interested in a “travel litterbox”. Some of them collapse, some have tent-like enclosures that can contain scents in hotel rooms, etc. But otherwise, a basic plastic litterbox is cheap and I keep a sealed, small bag of litter in it.

First off, give some thought to where you would be likely to evacuate TO. For me, we are almost certainly going to be at friends/family homes or a hotel. But many people need to head to disaster shelters. Those, in turn, are often schools or the like (in the US at least) and the policy on pets vary. Awareness of the fact that many people will avoid shelters - and sometimes refuse to evacuate at all - if their pets aren’t welcome has been growing over the years, but that doesn’t mean your pet will necessarily be able to stay with you. For example, some areas have smaller pets like cats/dogs stay at local humane societies. 2/

Between fires, floods, industrial accidents, earthquakes, war and surely other things I’m forgetting, a lot of people have had to evacuate this year. I’ve noticed many “go bag” checklists tend to lack detail around pet supplies, so thought I’d post some suggestions based on my cat’s go bag. (He, of course, expects me to carry it for him :neocat_bottom: ) What you need will vary based on your type of pet of course, but hopefully this gets you thinking around the various categories. Do what you can to include comfort items - your pet is going to be anxious just as you are. 1/

@MissConstrue@mefi.social So many specialists are hard to get into right now :( The local rheumatology place seriously gatekeeps appointments and has apparently told the GPs they won’t even see anyone who has fibromyalgia (despite the fact that office used to be the one diagnosing it!) I see an endocrinologist and the closest one is 4 hours away, but thankfully it’s in state so I do telehealth calls at this point (I’m stable so not needing major intervention). I hear from people with the same condition in discussion groups that they struggle to get timely endo appointments pretty much everywhere in the world. After some research, it seems there’s an extra large lack of sufficient endocrinologists around and yet more and more people being diagnosed with endocrine issues, like diabetes and thyroid problems. Not a good situation….

@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io A UK colleague who was on his very first trip to the US once asked me what I did for hot water while in hotels (he knew I drank both tea and coffee). He drooped a bit when I said I packed a travel kettle in my bag at that point along with a travel tea kit I’d put together. I think if he’d been there for more than a few days, he’d have gotten a kettle too.

@APBBlue@thepit.social I’m so sorry you’re going through this! I hope that you can get in to see someone sooner than November. Not to be all ‘the tool I have is a hammer so everything looks like a nail’, but where is the twitching happening? I ask because it’s common for autoimmune stuff to rear its head for women 40 and older and many of the symptoms of thyroid autoimmune issues mimic perimenopause. They can also cause anxiety and tremoring. Depending on where it is (the hand is very common but not the only spot), the tremoring can look like twitching. My finger used to twitch for days on end and sometimes my eyelid or elsewhere. If your thyroid numbers have not been tested recently, might be a good idea to test them. Best of luck on finding a solution either way!

Admittedly most of my fax usage was in a tech support job in an industry that is probably still using faxes in some places even today, for very irritating reasons. (Not healthcare but I know for certain healthcare is still using faxes in a lot of places. Not even just soft faxes but actual fax rooms and piles of paper. I had a surgery delayed due to that a couple of years ago even.)

And these days, SNAP users are heavily encouraged to disable their card via the apps until they’re literally in the store to run a transaction, so there’s a lot of logging in to do.

@troublewithwords@wandering.shop Not that it’s a quick help with reviewing grocery shopping, but I found the book Ultra-Processed People helped me to better understand the shape of the issue, as well as why that shape is on the vague side. To drastically oversimplify, there’s been mounting evidence that *something* about ultra-processed food is causing a problem, but they aren’t yet clear what aspect(s) are doing so. The book goes over what the various aspects are, recounts details of numerous interesting studies and more. It talks about the NOVA food classification system, which is what many sources look to for classifying ultra processed vs processed vs not foods. But I think even the creator said somewhere that it wasn’t created as a tool for consumers to look at their kitchen and easily figure out what was what necessarily. (Not that he’s against that, it just wasn’t the purpose of the system originally.)

If you have to stay overnight, it seems that inpatient rooms are much more often single occupant with an en suite bathroom these days, which is great. (My dad has told me stories of being hospitalized for several days long ago and they had 4 people in one room 😬)

Respirators in the halls, air filter in the room, and the ability to open the window a little, and thankfully no one got sick. There was a door for an adjoining room which I was not happy about but I blocked off the cracks and it didn’t sound like anyone was in there at least. The hospital situation was more nerve wracking, but at least the recovery room nurse assigned to me was the only one still wearing a mask herself.

@jenniferplusplus@hachyderm.io I’ve been using LoseIt to track my food. It does track calories but can turn on seperate tracking for numerous other things like protein. It does want some sort of target number but you can still see what the total is even if it goes under. It also tells you what food entries the numbers came from, so you can see what the biggest sources of each were etc.
