OK, after 2 days of messing around with Linux Mint next to working on a fresh Window 11 enterprise set up for our organisation, I can tell you that Linux Mint is more stable in its behaviour.
Whether or not my new Windows laptop wakes up from sleep when docked, is a seemingly random event: sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't and there's no way of knowing when it is one or the other.
Let's hope #UGent shifts to Linux really soon.

In my search for a setup to introduce an 11 year old to the internet, I came across Firefox policies. It allows me to block settings so the kid can't easily override the default DNS.
I tried @Waterfox and theoretically I should be able to do something similar, but couldn't get it to work. If someone can help me, would be nice (prefer water over fire tbh).
It's on Linux Mint and I used flatpak for waterfox install.

For decades climate deniers have been using dodgy statistics to "prove" there's no effect of global warming on "the number of hurricanes".

Question: I'm going to flash a linux distro on an old Dell I have lying around, and I want to have something kids friendly (as in: something a non-tech parent can easily control so their kids don't do silly stuff on the laptop and the interwebs).

@yaxu Out of curiosity: what do you use or would you prefer to use? At our department a lot of the #Rstats based course writing moved to quarto (in case you don't know that : https://quarto.org ) But as it's pandoc based, you still need to get into the latex bit if you want your PDFs to look a bit nice.

I get your frustration, but I'd pick latex over a word template every time. At least you see where tags/environments start and end
I've worked with a publisher that used word templates for writing a book, and that was two years of formatting hell.
Also, equations. Fuck that equation hell in Word.

@tek That could als explain why the image generating parts often collapse to a state where people tend to be darker skinned and black haired. (and why altright eejits have been whining about these image generators being "too woke")

@openscience Of course they use the UAH dataset. They always do.
- TLT is *calculated* based on satellite data from other sources. It's not measurements.
- the UAH dataset uses a different method for this calculation than all other satellite based datasets.
- UAH also uses a different correction for drift of measurements than NASA, and the UAH "correction" removes part of the trend.
- the UAH differs significantly from the other big datasets.
