Months are draconic; the month begins on the day whose aparahna falls closest to lunar perigee. (Aparahna is the instant 3/5 between sunrise and sunset). 1 beat is 1/500 of the time between sunrise and sunset if the sun is up, or 1/500 of the time between sunset and sunrise if the sun is down. 1/2

Lots of people just use the slideshow as a bad teleprompter instead of learning how to use it to complement as presentation. Way too many people don't even know how to put their presentation into fullscreen. Source: I was at uni form 2004 to 2008. Good profs used presentations to complement lectures. Bad profs used it as the lecture.

It told me there were two, and pointed to the specific rows. The correct answer was over 400. Shortly after, I have a presentation where I cited this as a reason never to use it.

Tried implementing the Sūrya Siddhānta in Python. It works, but it's as slow as treacle. Fortran, Julia, and Rust all have to deal with integer overflow. Guess I'm going to have to learn me a Haskell for great good.

Nice thing about Python is that I never have to worry about integer overflow, which is good because the maths of the Sūrya Siddhānta quickly involve some really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, tremendous numbers. Building bigint directly into the interpreter and using it automatically probably takes up extra CPU cycles but the convenience is worth it.

@aredridel @futurebird Trig actually started with ways to work out the lengths of chords and half-chords. Al-Battani realised that if you divide the chord by the radius the units cancel and you always get the same amount, and oh look now it's about triangles.

I expect it also found that using cloud apps saves time and is more convenient than installing anything on a hard disk.

@devxvda That wasn't Kellogg. Also he wasn't a doctor. William Kellogg was strongly influenced by Sylvester Graham, who also wasn't a doctor. Graham had this whole clean living idea, which included no alcohol, bland food, vegetarianism, and no wanking. Some of his ideas weren't unreasonable, and some of them very much were. Same with Kellogg. OG cornflakes were one component of a whole clean living philosophy which didn't allow jerkin' the gherkin or eatin' a gherkin @CorvidCrone @beeoproblem

So new life hack: You can probably read any paywalled article with a text-based browser, probably because they don't do scripts at all.

@q @alice Because þ is unvoiced; it's pronounced /θ/. The initial sound of ðe word 'ðe' (usually spelled 'the') is voiced, pronounced /ð/. Ðey are different sounds which happen to be represented by the same digraph in standard English orþography because ancient Greek didn't have a voiced dental fricative.
