This weekend we had the pleasure of doing a workshop on radical video production at the Powershift (@powershiftnet@beta.birdsite.live) conference in Bvlbancha (aka New Orleans).
We didn’t expect the room to be so packed with more than 50 people excited about visually documenting their stories and efforts. It gave us a lot of joy to hear all the amazing projects people are working on and thinking about.
We shared a little about the values that guide the camera work we’re doing on The Elements of Mutual Aid. Then we had a breakout session for folks to talk about ways to better support video production in their communities. Here’s a few of the topics folks discussed:
- Not letting a lack of professional equipment or experience hold projects back.
- Sharing resources/equipment and countering gatekeeping with a value for collective learning was also discussed.
- Recognizing the amount of labor that goes into video documentation and partnering with other people in your community with video making skills and equipment.
- Finding creative ways to access equipment from maker spaces and universities.
Here’s a couple photos of the zine we wrote for the workshop. We knew we weren’t going to get to a lot of the questions we find relevant to this work so we made the zine with the intention of folks continue these conversations with each other outside the workshop.
