I wasn’t raised by nice people. I wasn’t raised to be nice or pleasant. I have had to figure this out on my own, and I have had to invent “nice” Chris on the fly. It’s an understatement to say this has been slow going. But I’ve been reading a great big thick David Bowie biography and the thing that keeps coming up is how polite and caring and concerned he was for the people around him, and just how pleasant he was to be around, and how it really affected people. I went out to play a gig tonight with that on my mind and really tried to step out of my comfort zone to show all these things more outwardly, because while I do genuinely feel that way towards people, I’m realizing how bad I am At really showing, bringing these things to the table amongst acquaintances & friends, and you know what? I think it went well and I learned a thing about how I can behave towards people I like and care about to help them understand that. It was a good evening. We played well, which is always nice, but that was the least of it. And what’s more, I get to try again Sunday afternoon. The owner of our record label has asked us to play at his birthday party & I want to go be actually, actively nice to people in this new way. /journal, thanks for listening.

That’s at least a month’s worth of off-hours scanning, but there’s boxes in there labeled with backpack trips I went on in the mid 70’s and 2 boxes postmarked 1955 & addressed to my grandfather. They’re Kodachrome so hopefully they’re ok!

I had not seen my cousin in 32 years until today, and we talked for 3 hours over lunch. She was a journalist/state editor at the Oregonian and an article she worked on as editor was nominated for a Pulitzer in 2015. I think we kinda look alike!

Today July 9th was my friend Lisa’s birthday. She would have been 64. We fell madly in love at age 12, and had a pubescent romance until my family moved back to San Francisco a year later. We stayed in touch though throughout the years and both eventually ended up in Austin. We had children the same age, and were in similar lines of work- she was a designer and editor & I designed and printed things… 7 or 8 years ago she moved to New Mexico and we mostly stayed In touch via text, until I got the message she’d had a fatal heart attack a little less than 3 years ago. I always called or messaged her on her birthday, and it’s hard now 2 years in a row to not be able to make that call. She was a good person and I miss her a bunch. 709

Back before Covid, I had more going on musically. This was an utterly creative outlet. This one is long, but it goes off in unexpected directions and by 12 or 13 minutes in, gets pretty wild. This is more or less what it sounds like inside my head a lot of the time. We’re making it up as we go.

@adhdeanasl@beige.party I saw him with Belew, Levin and Vai on the Beat tour last year, and it was amazing. It may have been an early show, but the look of intense concentration on his face as he focused on what was going on around him led me to believe that he is perhaps at least human. (It was a fantastic show) It’s a trip though going back and watching Bruford play this same material on YouTube- he looks so relaxed and happy, playing the most difficult music I know. He is seriously an alien.

I really should be more impressed as a Flickr old school member that it has even survived, but what’s impressing now is how well it’s being maintained here in the present. I shouldn’t take for granted feeling confident that my content there will remain in a stable condition. It’s super-satisfying to find a static link I posted 10-15 years ago to a Flickr photo that’s still right where I left it. The cost of my pro account to me is the cost of maintaining this thing for everyone. And yes, especially NASA.

Getting back to earth wasn’t part of the design and seems extraordinarily difficult. I would be happy though if it were still in orbit though, and we found it.
