So, as vast tracks of land get converted into solar ‘farms’, you’ve got to wonder: why the rush to convert perfectly usable farmland, or ecologically important wildland at scale like this, rather than putting solar panels where we have already paved over everything anyway?

An inarticulate scream of rage, a stream of cursing, are both just as appropriate as responses to obscenity as carefully measured intellectual words. When evil is happening, when obscenities are being committed, anger is an appropriate human response. If language disturbs your sensibilities more than actions and reality, I suggest you consider what *you* accomplish by tone policing certain words instead of focussing of the real issues.

Once again for the back of the room: blocking a person does not ‘silence’ them or impede their free speech. It is a simple action of self-determination, like hanging up the phone, or getting up and moving to a different table, or telling a person they aren’t welcome in your home. The anti-blockers think you owe it to them to stay on the phone, that you can’t leave the table, or will show up at your home anyway; these are people who show themselves to be dangerous.

We became a 6 person household last (6 adult persons as of last month). We managed to do that precisely because we aren’t urban, but live in 70s era suburban housing stock in Edmonton that was built with larger families in mind (1180 sq ft “bi-level” or raised bungalow)

Fedi is hanging out where people know how boorish that is, the guests are a fascinating mix of clever folks passionate about every cool thing under the sun, and everyone just turns their backs on the shallow personalities. That it bothers them is a sign that it works.

My family trees are pretty narrow, so that’s not a thing I have experience with. According to the old ways, your cousins kids are also cousins of some sort (first cousins once removed?) and cousin is already gender neutral. My understanding is that lot of people who are close to their cousins kids will call them nieces and nephews (niblings) anyway.

The entire copyright system built over the last several decades is inherently oppressive and extractive, assuming guilt and requiring people to challenge an prove their innocence. As someone who is most likely to post my own students and ensembles playing I get copy strikes all the time and have for years, on public domain works because the system is built around the premise that the first person to register a performance own the work.

POTUS was worried that Iran’s nuclear program was too advanced (even though he just recently blew it up, apparently) and that this was too destabilizing to the world and might lead to nuclear war.

Apparently (I’m told) the Grudgby team at Hexside School of Magic and Demonics are called the Banshees. You can definitely get tshirt merch, but I’m not so sure about a jersey.

I have been diligently breaking up the assemblage of sticks as they make it to encourage them to choose another tree - magpies will usually start multiple nests before settling on and finishing the most promising site - and as I do so I am noticing one of the birds hops with a distinct list over a slightly deformed foot.

It’s heart-warming to know our tenacious little visitor has survived and is building a good life and a family of their own and I find myself wondering if the unusual choice of our cedar for a nest - only ~10 feet off the ground rather than the more typical 20-30 feet - reflects a remembered aversion nesting up high?

A magpie story: two years ago in June, a wind storm blew a fledgling magpie out of the nest at the top of the neighbour’s towering blue spruce. Most of its siblings were able to flutter to a new roost, but this runt was left behind in our yard with an injured leg and not yet able to fly. It was a perilous week that included hazing from unrelated adult magpies, hiding from the other neighbour’s cat, the local coyotes, and crows.

This year, a pair of magpies has decided to built a nest in one of our cedar trees, *right* outside our window. I’m not ok with this - as anyone who has ever listened to a family of young magpies squabble with loud cracking penetrating adolescent voices will understand - but I bear them no ill will.
