The take-over of Billy Bishop Airport now make even more evil sense (although Pearson is actually closer to his house). This BS about going to the US to fight Trump's tariffs has got to stop. He just likes to compare notes with Republicans. Even the line about "regular travel throughout Ontario" feels implausible given how out of touch he is. Is their an airport near his cottage that can handle jets this size? @Sanderde

@chu He could have used that Parliamentary majority for so much good, but instead he chose evil. And now we’re locked in until 2029 — which is even longer than Ford’s reign of horror and corruption.

Yes. to this. I particularly appreciate #8 for getting around the zero-sum trap: "The goal should focus on lowering the price of basic new housing, not resale. ..For example, making it easier to build family-sized infill multiplexes in big cities would put downward pressure on home prices in smaller communities, as it would reduce “drive until you qualify” traffic, while at the same time raising land values in the neighbourhoods where those multiplexes would be built." @mikepmoffatt

The existing building is fine and a treasure. But, yes, all that surface parking could be used better. @AskPippa

Demolition by decay is a classic Toronto strategy. The province also let the Ontario Science Centre get run down, too, and Ford's plan to build new, diminished one at Ontario Place is pure scam. Fortunately, the old OSC building still survives and there's a chance it can be revived/repurposed. Also fortunate is that the latest design proposal for the new building is far less hideous than the previous one — but still doomed to look gimmicky and dated by the time it's built. This province is run by people who think their ignorant gut feelings are as good as anyone's educated analysis (but still want all the benefits of a modern, high-tech society). @AskPippa

The number and scale of decisions made by this government because Doug Ford "heard something" from a few friends is staggering and horrific. Government by gossip and Doug's gut instinct. @Sanderde

In my University-Rosedale riding there's a byelection to replace Chrystia Freeland, and the NDP is utterly hopeless.

Search for University-Rosedale NDP and their website features only their provincial representative and makes no mention of their federal candidate, Serena Purdy, who has a website under her name alone. It at least lists her policies, unlike the provincial one which only asks for donations and volunteers. Neither even link to either national or provincial party websites.

@dyckron It would be nice if we could be pragmatic without being defeatist. And if we could trust that these deals, like Harper’swith China, won’t soon return to haunt us. Sin in haste, repent at leisure, as they used to say. That he is simultaneously digging us deeper into the O&G hole does not give me hope. More defeatism, I suppose.

RE: @dmacphee@mas.to

"Supporters of separatism say there will be no taxes and a booming oil industry without Ottawa’s meddling."

This fantasy precedes the recent rise of the separatists but has been prevalent for decades. Politicians really should do more to squelch it.

Danielle Smith's self-centred opportunism must not be allowed to fracture the country.

@benroyce@mastodon.social If you look through mainstream news photo annuals from WWII to the 1970s, or Life magazine, it’s astonishing how much gore they printed. Our contemporary media has protected society from the real violence of everyday life as well as war. Instead, we have a cartoon or video game understanding of what real, violence entails.

Among the many flaws of GDP is that, like capitalism in general, it fails to fully account for "externalities." And it certainly can't measure fairness or sustainability. @EricLawton@kolektiva.social

All those lands were formerly rail and warehouse lands, as can be seen in this nifty before & after series of aerial shots. They were removed sometime between the 1965 and 1978 views. https://schoolofcities.github.io/historical-aerial-imagery-toronto/ @8r3n7@mstdn.ca @notjustbikes@social.notjustbikes.com @collectifission@greennuclear.online

I keep saying, take the money we now give to PostMedia and put it an arm's length fund for independent journalism. And a national fediverse server would be fantastic. Also an email server run by the Post Office. @leftylabourtech@mstdn.social
