we’ve had two low-grade terrorist incidents in our neighborhood in ~24 hours. A small explosion at a Jewish school, and a small explosion at an American bank (explicitly claimed immediately by some group as an anti-American statement). I live in a very Jewish neighborhood, which to be clear is not the one marked “Jewish quarter” on maps, due to Reasons within the last century you can reason about

Oh man, if only there were some human-based solution to the problem of AIs with commit permissions autonomously accepting malicious pull requests at odd hours of the night. yes spellcheck this is definitely how language works, if you refer to a guy with a Dutch-sounding name then the rest of the sentence clearly needs to switch to Dutch

an anecdote about how not everything about history is as dire as it may seem at first glance:

when the Minoan palace of Knossos was dug up in the early 1900s, archaeologist Arthur Evans looked at tablets that showed man, woman, and child symbols with accounting symbols, and came to the conclusion that they represented a bustling slave trade - whole families being pawned off on the regular. (Scripta Minoa, volume 2).

Eventually, Linear B was fully deciphered, and it turned out these tablets were accounting for how much food was needed for each household – based on standard portions for men, women and children.
