@nogodsnomasters@kolektiva.social one thing to note here, which only reinforces the whole point. The 40 months the CRO received is apparently "slightly less" than the 6 years the prosecution asked for. 6 years is 72 months. That's not "slightly less" than 6 years. That slightly more than 3 years. 3 years snd 4 months, to be precise.

@stuartb@social.teamb.space @nogodsnomasters@kolektiva.social Alternatively, if we took a 15 year's sentence to be the standard for stealing $100, then the executive who stole $3B should get a 30,000,000 year sentence. Yeah, a 30 million year sentence would be the executive being treated the same as the homeless man.

@SeanPLynch@mastodon.social @nogodsnomasters@kolektiva.social and lets not forget that the homeless man handed himself in, and showed remorse for his actions, while the CEO didn't...

@stuartb@social.teamb.space @SeanPLynch@mastodon.social @nogodsnomasters@kolektiva.social I smell something else in that second newsicle. A judge that housed a man for 15 years in an extremely expensive state run housing program. 😉

@doctormo@floss.social @stuartb@social.teamb.space @SeanPLynch@mastodon.social @nogodsnomasters@kolektiva.social Did you know that the USA allows forced, unpaid labour for prisoners, and that for profit prisons make money selling prison labour like to-order slavery? I didn't know for a long time.

@failedLyndonLaRouchite@mas.to @stuartb@social.teamb.space @SeanPLynch@mastodon.social @nogodsnomasters@kolektiva.social I can't read the snopes article, because snopes doesn't know the difference between a tracking blocker and an ad blocker. I can read this article from Cornell though, and it does more to verify than invalidate this story. https://publications.lawschool.cornell.edu/jlpp/2011/11/17/a-tale-of-two-criminals/
A Tale of Two Criminals
A Tale of Two Criminals
If you’ve poked around the internet the past month, you might have come across the image below. The meme juxtaposes two news articles to highlight the questionable retributive values behind American criminal law. But some people are crying hoax about this viral phenomenon—are they correct?

@Space_Burger_Steve@mstdn.ca @failedLyndonLaRouchite@mas.to @stuartb@social.teamb.space @SeanPLynch@mastodon.social @nogodsnomasters@kolektiva.social Snopes marks the story as true. However, it also explains Allen's sentence: Mitigating factors in Allen's sentencing were the fact that the fraud was already underway when he became CEO of TBW in 2003, that his crime was a non-violent one, and that Allen was one of six persons who received credit on their sentences for cooperating with investigators and testifying against Farkas, the mastermind of the fraud scheme. (Farkas himself was sentenced to thirty years in prison.)

@failedLyndonLaRouchite@mas.to @stuartb@social.teamb.space @SeanPLynch@mastodon.social @nogodsnomasters@kolektiva.social CEOs kill people in the millions by a single deal and cause other people to resort to violence for 100 dollars. Just not with a gun, personally.

@failedLyndonLaRouchite@mas.to @stuartb@social.teamb.space @SeanPLynch@mastodon.social @nogodsnomasters@kolektiva.social Yes, the homeless guy robbed a bank which probably caused trauma and emotional stress for the people involved. Was it more than $3 billion worth of stress? If not then it should have been less than the white collar criminal's sentence. Or the white collar criminal's sentence should have been increased to 15 years.

@stuartb@social.teamb.space @nogodsnomasters@kolektiva.social @SeanPLynch@mastodon.social @failedLyndonLaRouchite@mas.to “We were able to confirm Brown pleaded guilty to first degree robbery on 14 January 2009 and was sentenced to 15 years hard labor without the possibility of probation, parole or suspension of sentence, according to the Caddo Parish court clerk's office.” The difference is even more egregious than the length of the sentence: the homeless man was sentenced to 15 yrs slavery.
